Photos from Reading v Tranmere 1976.

by Ark Royal » 24 Sep 2007 15:56

Hi Everyone

I have finally got around to scanning and publishing some of the dozens of Reading photos I have.

The first batch are taken from the Evening Post the day after Reading v Tranmere and THE goal by Robin Friday. Knowing that I had witnessed something special that night, I bought and kept the EP and still have it to this day, albeit a bit brown and battered.

Dozens more photos to come including some taken the day before and during the last match ever at Elm Park. Watch this space.

In the meantime, click the link, play the slideshow and wallow in nostalgia-ville. Enjoy!

Yep can see 'em fine.

Not exactly clear what was involved in "the" goal though..

Unless it involved Friday turning invisible.

Sorry zac. You had to be there. Probably the closest to it I have seen is Thierry Henry's goal against ManUre a few years ago.

That match report says only 10,961 were there... That can't be right can it? Surely it was nearer to 100,961? I was there and remember it well even though I was only 3, living in Crawley and never heard of Football, let alone Reading.

I wasn't there and glad i wasn't! What would all of us young ones do without colour vision!? When i look at a apple, i expect to see a green one, not a grey one. Oh I love modern technology.

Agreed! When I was scanning the photos in I was amazed at the sheer size of the Evening Post from back then. Huge bloody broadsheet with not one hint of colour!

Thanks, Ark Royal. Brings the memories flooding back. Thanks for proving that it actually happened and we didn't just imagine it.

Ark, thanks for those !!

What a project there is to be done - pulling together all the hundreds of pieces of memorabilia there must be out there and creating an online museum.

I know there are people who have some really good RFC stuff up already but with the will and a bit of coordination it could be really special.

Imagine having every programme on line (and they all exist so it is possible !!)

I did start that project once. Began to scan every page of every programme (I had every programme since 60-61 season) into a database, but it just got ridiculous!

I believe there is one person who has every programme for every game that was ever produced....

Not sure how many hundreds of thousands of pages that would be. Just getting the covers on line would be good.

I have started a new project, which is to scan all the programmes I have and burn to DVD. Main reason ios so I can bin about 8 massive boxes of paper copies from my loft. Trouble is it's bloody time consuming. Not sure how legal it is, bearing in mind copyright laws and stuff, but let me know any RFC matches you're interested in and I'll see if I can find them in my collecion and scan them in for you. Beware though, saving as uncompressed JPG files (for high quality), means large file sizes. I think last season's programmes come out at c 14Mb each, when put into an MSWord document, but then they are 42pages in full colour

Very interesting I wasn't there sadly my first season was 78-79, but I can remember a volley by Trever Senior in a cup tie against Colchester down the Tilehurst rd end as the best goal I ever saw at EP.

Good call. Part of the best quality hat-trick I've ever seen.

(We lost on away goals in extra time  )
