Must Win Game Ends In Defeat

Nigel Adkins' second game in charge of the Royals saw his second straight defeat, leaving Reading firmly bottom of the table and certain for relegation to the Championship. Adkins' two defeats, combined with Dolan's one and McDermott's five mean Reading have now lost eight straight fixtures - including seven in the league. That run of defeats is a new club record and the only comfort is that record will be shared across three managers.

After a weak showing at Arsenal, Reading showed some positive signs early on against Adkins' former club before fading out as only one result looked likely. In the end Reading looked very poor and were well beaten by a side who were comfortable throughout and might well have won by more. Southampton rose to mid-table to all but confirm their survival in the Premier League this season thanks to a goal in each half earning them a 0-2 victory. It will be a strange end to season for Reading with nothing to play for as Adkins plans for life in the Championship.
