Re: European Leagues Thread 2012/2013

Old Man Andrews The scoreline isn't the funniest thing about the game either when you look at the name of the player red carded.

The match is a stain on VVV's history.

Re: European Leagues Thread 2012/2013

^9 goals in the last 37 minutes.

Ansu Fati is now the youngest scorer in Barca, La Liga, Spain and El Clasico history. Also the youngest in 40 years to be sent off.

Re: Best Player in the World Ever

Not seriously putting him forward as the greatest ever, but I'm always surprised Zlatan Ibrahimovic isn't at least talked of more as a genuine 'all-time great'. One of the criticisms levelled at Messi is his being a one-club man (not one I agree with, same as I don't think Giggs' career is denigrate...

Re: Weekend Football

Everton, Leipzig, Milan and Real Sociedad top of their respective tables after the weekend. Which is excellent. Shame PSG has regained top spot from Lille after their dodgy start to the season. Six wins from six, 20 goals scored and one conceded since!

Re: Weekend Football

Remarkable from Bamford - as many goals in his first six PL appearances this season as in his last 21 in the Championship last time.

Re: VAR

We've ended up in a situation where now instead of referees not being accountable for their decisions, it is VAR that is not. Where is the official statement on the Pickford incident? And the Maguire foul? Where is the acknowledgement that the VAR referee got it wrong? Or an explanation as to why he...

Re: Best Player in the World Ever

Opinions are opinions of course. Not sure how anyone can ever have Messi at no. 7. As for 'he always scores the same type of goal, and when Barca are 2-0 or 3-0 up', I almost don't know where to start with this. First, he has over 700 career goals. How many goals do we think Barca score? Second, he ...

Re: Football - The Covid Years

My point above about it not being exciting when these clubs play each other every week got me thinking about how it does feel exciting and a novelty when some big teams in Europe meet having not done so for years, and so I wondered which giants of the game have not met for yonks? For some reason th...

Re: VAR

Half of the problem is refs failing to enforce rules that exist and allowing their authority to erode over decades. Same with diving, feigning injury etc. They've got the tools, use them. 100%. Completely agree. I'm sure there are better examples, but a few years back referees clamped down on wrest...

Re: Football - The Covid Years

CL is more exciting (though it has lost some of it's appeal in recent years) as the teams don't meet very often. All of them playing each other twice a year will very soon lose it's appeal Traditional big teams who then become the mediocre teams in this new format and can't compete for the title wi...

Re: Football - The Covid Years

Something I've thought on the 'Box Office' matches. Sky and BT announce their live fixtures only a couple of months ahead. There is an opportunity for Box Office games to be manipulated going forward, and crucially (and cynically) in the name of 'fairness', i.e. Liverpool were on Sky or BT around 30...

Re: European Leagues Thread 2012/2013

As an all too frequent reminder that despite there being pockets of racism in the UK, which don't actually do awfully compared to southern Europe. Ansu Fati has pace to burn, so much so that Spanish newspaper ABC has depicted him as 'a black street seller fleeing police.' https://www.theguardian.com...

Re: Champions League/Europa League 2020/21

Real currently 3-0 down at home to Shaktar. Lost 3-2. And remarkably, Shakhtar got that result with just 13 first-team squad members, following 19 positive COVID tests that included many of the usual starting XI. Incredible result. Good win for Liverpool. Very open game as you'd expect at Ajax. Cou...

Re: VAR

Again, much like the NFL, the ref should have free reign to refer to VAR if he's unsure but a decision to refer to VAR must be made from the pitch. The other thing with the NFL is that when contentious decisions are made, the Officials' Commissioner will come out and explain decisions. There is com...

Re: BFIT - Wycombe (H)

srsly, that is a ridiculous (and patronising) statement. I mean, we were only marginally better than them over the 90 minutes and yet we are three points clear at the top of the Championship. Wycombe gave 100% but just don't have any obviously quality players who can do something unexpected to win ...
