Top 3 Reading players EVER

by Harpers So Solid Crew » 23 Sep 2010 21:28

once again after the small success of the games thread I bring you the often repeated players thread. What we are after, or I am is, the players that you saw play at the mighty RFC that you wanted to pay to watch, ones that you always thought would make it worth the expense, whatever it was at the time worth spending.

As an oldie I get to start again

No 1, the mighty Robin Friday, big, tall, entertaining and fecking skillful, saw some marvellous goals, wish had been there for that one.

No 2 old fella Jimmy Quinn what a disappointment he was, some old git from nowhere, but FFS could he score, and for fun, in all honesty for him alone I wish we had beaten Bolton, he deserved a crack at the top with us. I still wish he had come on and taken that pen, and I said so at the time.

No 3 Shorty Steve Death everyone knows he would have played for England had he been taller, instead we had a top keeper for many a season, just seemed wrong somehow, but he entertained as much as a goal scorer IMHO.

Off you go folks

Obviously Friday although I never saw him play.

Darius Wdowczyk. Superb, cultured centre-half. After years of Martin Hicks it just didn't seem right to have someone as good as this playing for us.

Michael Gilkes. My favourite player. Yes he could be very inconsistent but I just loved watching him when he was on fire. He scared the daylights out of the opposition at times.

Honourable mentions to Steve Death, Simon Osborn, Neil Webb, Fozzy and Kerry Dixon.

1 Got to agree with you on this one. Robin Friday.
2 So many to choose but I am going for Michael Gilkes.
3 Someone who grew and grew in stature wearing a Reading shirt leading to an England debut not long after, Matthew Upson.

Last season's (1999-2000) player of the year. Caskey already has a fair bit of Premiership experience after his four year spell at Spurs where he started at a trainee in 1992. He'll definately return to the Premiership soon (hopefully with the Royals). Some people love to get on his back, but others will argue that he's just too good for Division Two - or Division One for that matter. There's no doubt that Caskey is one of the best players in the side. On his day his diagonal passes across the pitch win us games. Sometimes the passes go astray - but it could be argued his team mates aren't getting into the right place at the right time. And we haven't mentioned all those goals - Caskey was last season's top scorer for the Royals. Quality player with a massive future.

Hah.

Why don't you make a positive post for a change instead of trying to take the piss out of others.
Just do as the thread quests and name your top three players FFS.

its about doing it for a sustained period - not rocking up for 2 seasons then p*ssing off - so with that in mind.

Mick Gooding - never had a bad game, during the good and the very bad.
Dave Kitson - complicated, difficult - but look at his scoring record when we were good and bad - a proper legend
Graeme Murty - he was a good right back but a fantastic captain in a team full of leaders - we really miss him.

My real top three would be:

1) Kevin Doyle. Great attitude and just a superb player.
2) Adie Williams. Loved the club and put his heart and soul into the game.
3) Nicky Forster. That boy sure could run!

Robin Friday - A totally unique talent at the level we were playing at
Dariusz Wdowczyk - Pure unflappable class. McGhee getting him for free was tantamount to larceny
Phil Parkinson - Never ever the best footballer on the pitch, but always gave the impression that he cared

2. Kevin Doyle - a true team player.
3. Graeme Murty - a captain like no other.
