What the papers say: Ipswich

Simon Church struck the winner barely 20 seconds after stepping off the bench as Reading edged out Ipswich to climb into the npower Championship play-off places.

The game looked to be heading for stalemate after both sides had been reduced to 10 men early in the second half, Luke Hyam and Royals skipper Matt Mills seeing red.

But striker Church, only brought on after a late injury to Hal Robson-Kanu, was in the right place at the right time to seal maximum points for the hosts.

Reading went into the game on a high after their 3-0 defeat against Barnsley at the weekend.

Royals boss Brian McDermott made one other change with Robson-Kanu making his first league start in place of Church.

Town boss Roy Keane started with Connor Wickham on the bench after taking the highly-rated striker off before the break in the 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe on Saturday. His replacement Hyam was handed the start.

Keane's men started with intent, youngster Andros Townsend letting fly in the opening seconds but his effort was never on target.

It was a scrappy opening but Robson-Kanu had some joy running at the visitors' defence, beating a couple of men before delivering a dangerous ball into the box that Ipswich keeper Marton Fulop did not look comfortable with but got enough on to clear.

The first real chance of the game fell to Ipswich as striker Jason Scotland outmuscled Reading defender Matt Mills but, with all the goal to aim at, fired wide of Adam Federici's post.

The hosts rallied and another good Robson-Kanu centre found Jimmy Kebe - via Shane Long - who also fired wide, while Jem Karacan's header failed to trouble Fulop.

Hyam was shown a yellow card for bringing down Long and Fulop looked shaky with another high ball - which with better control would have been punished by Robson-Kanu.

Mills followed Hyam into the book after impeding Townsend as a largely disappointing half limped to a close.

Ipswich began the second period well but were rocked in the 52nd minute when Hyam was shown a second yellow card for kicking the ball away after Carlos Edwards had fouled Robson-Kanu.

Mills headed into Fulop's arms as the hosts looked to make their advantage count before Keane made a double substitution in the 56th minute, Wickham and Reggie Lambe coming on for Scotland and Edwards.

The numbers were evened up three minutes later when skipper Mills was sent off after a body check on Townsend but the game needed a goal.

Long headed weakly into the arms of Fulop and McDermott made his first change, replacing Kebe with Michail Antonio and he almost made an instant impact, setting up Karacan who drew a good stop out of Fulop.

Jake Livermore was thrown into the fray for Townsend and had a go from 20 yards out but in keeping with the game it missed the target.

Robson-Kanu went off with four minutes after taking a knock and the enforced change turned out to be inspired.

Harte swung over a corner that was struck goalwards by Karacan where Church, on the field for less than a minute, diverted it home.

The Royals were forced to finish the game with nine men after Karacan was injured in the build-up to the goal but they held on for the points.

3-0 defeat to Barnsley?

I would have thought we'd have been quite depressed about that.

Royals spirit leads to another late show

http://www.bet365.com/news/en/betting/football/championship/royals-spirit-leads-to-another-late-show

Reading boss Brian McDermott was impressed with his side's desire as they scored late to beat Ipswich by a single goal on Tuesday night.

Simon Church was the hero for Reading at the Madjeski on Tuesday.Simon Church was the hero, coming on with two minutes remaining and finding the net with what was effectively his first kick.

The 1-0 win resulted in Reading leap-frogging Ipswich into 6th place and are now 11/1 to win the Championship outright, with Ipswich available at 14/1.

Royals boss Brian McDermott was impressed with his side's desire on the night.

"That win was a testament to the desire and will of the players. We keep going until the end and when you do that anything can happen," McDermott said.

"You can win games like that but you can also lose.

"At 0-0 and we were not settling, but trying to win the game. We kept a good shape and it was a decent game between two decent sides."

Reading have now had three players sent off in the last three games, but McDermott was quick to insist there was no discipline problem at the club.

"We have now had three players sent off in our last three matches but we don't have a discipline problem," he said.

"The fouls were innocuous. If you look at our club and the way we play there's no ill discipline about the place."

Ipswich also had Luke Hyam sent off and with both sides reduced to 10 men the game looked destined to finish goalless.

Reading's dynamic winger Jimmy Kebe, so often a threat this season, was nullified by an outstanding performance by Ipswich's Jaime Peters, but Roy Keane conceded his side had not posed a sufficient threat to take anything from the game.

"I am not sure we deserved to win. Anyone who knows anything about football knows that if you don't put the ball in the back of the net then trust me you are going nowhere fast," he said.

"We didn't play bad but if you don't get goals you will not win. Our leading scorer got eight goals last season and if that happens again we are in trouble.

"I do think our strikers need a little more to work from as well. It's a team game and we all have to do better.

"I have been in enough games where it's nip and tuck at the end and with five minutes to go the home team win.

"We should have done better against the set piece that led to the goal and we were slow to get out.

"I thought our red card was coming. The referee was quite quick to send him off but I have no complaints.

"The back four have done well because Reading are good going forward. We now have a couple of suspensions but don't worry, we can get 11 out for the next game."

Preston host Reading this weekend (home win 7/4, draw 23/10, away win 6/4 - Full Time Result) and Ipswich are 11/10 at home to beat Leeds, with the away win on offer at 5/2 and the draw 23/10.

There was a report in Reading Chronicle on this game but couldn't find one on Saturday's game v Barnsley.

You might expect that omission from The Times but not the Rdg Chron!

And the Chron also had Rupert Murdoch trying to take Redaing over in 1983 and merge us with Oxffs.

These newspaper moguls, they all look the same to the Chron's ace cub reporters.

No - bet365 have Forest slight favourite ahead of Reading to be promoted, yet have Reading ahead of Forest to win the league. At this early stage, it's only safe to say QPR, which explains the odds on for promotion. None of the other teams look nearly good enough...
