BBC1 South Tonight 7.30pm Inside Out

by Royal Lady » 08 Nov 2010 18:20

Trevor Senior just told me he's going to be on it. I think it's probably to do with the visit to the WWI graves in France that he, Mick Gooding, Adie Williams and Brian McDermott visited. And I've put it on The Team because McD is our manager and if I put it anywhere else it will get lost, so don't bother telling me I've put it in the wrong place.

Very good. Senior got a bit emotional at the end.

Was beautiful and tragic in equal measure.

Nine Reading players in the footballers battalion died, one just 16, same age as my son.

Once so close to greatness and then possibly who knows, perhaps one of the countries biggest clubs had we kept that team together and built on it.

"In 1913 Reading toured Italy and beat Genoa 4-2 and A.C. Milan 5-0, narrowly lost 2-1 to Casale, before beating Italian champions Pro Vercelli 6-0 and the full Italian national team 2-0, prompting the leading sports newspaper Corriere della Sera to write "without doubt, Reading FC are the finest foreign team seen in Italy." Reading were invited back for another tour the following year, but there is no evidence it took place. It is possible it was cancelled due to the imminence of World War I, which claimed the lives of many Reading F.C. players, including Alan Foster, who put a hat-trick past Milan."

RIP

Heroes though Adie (where did Ady come from?), Mick and Clever Trevor will always be, why were they dressed like chavs? Jeans and t-shirts do not show much respect although I'm sure they meant no insult.

No ambition in 1913 (although there was the little matter of a war a year later).
No ambition in 2010.
Nothing changes much.

They weren't at a funeral. :|

I've been to both the Somme and Ypres battlefields and related war graves and I wore jeans. I think the fact people bother to go and remember even all these years on is the most important factor, rather than what someone might be wearing in order to do that. :|
