Best 4 Reading players since 1970?

by Gordons Cumming » 20 Sep 2011 19:15

Just indulge me for the moment.

Got a little project on at the moment
Contributions appreciated.

Probably only from the oldies who've been a Reading supporter for 40 years. (short thread expected  )but any opinions welcomed.

Best 4 Reading players? 1 per decade would be good.

I'll start, off the top of my head.......(haven't thought too hard)

Friday - 1970's
Hicks - 1980's
Osborn - 1990's
Sigurddson (sp) - 2000's

Cheers in anticipation.

It depends if you mean best actual player in terms of ability or best re contribution to club.

Osborn only played for RFC for one season (and was injured for a good part of it) - I'd have to go with Parky from the 90's.

I thought "super" Simon Osborne was there for 2 years, in the side that went up with McGhee and the one that went to the Play Off v Bolton the following year before going to QPR in the close season, though I may be wrong.

No - Osborn was signed after we had gone up in summer 1994 I think as a replacement for Kevin Dillon.

Good call, Parky. How could I forget him?

Apart from Friday in the 70's this is an impossibility. There have been so many who have made outstanding contributions to our Club, and so many unsung heroes too!

I stand corrected, shows what an impression he made, he was a fine player as I remember, very neat and cultured. As is so often with ex Royals he never really went on to achieve what we expected of him. 1993-94 season is to this day, the most attractive football I have seen from the hoops. Many happy memories of away trips that year, 6-4 at Exeter is one that stands out as does 4-0 at Blackpool.

Don't feel qualified to comment until the 90's as was too engrossed in school to care...

90's - Shaka (no one ever picks the keeper!)
00's - Little

Not sure I can get these dates right and "best" is a bit of a hazy category. For the record I was just to young for Friday. Been a supporter, for around 36 years. Here goes:

Richie Bowman
Darius Wdochesyicocycsz (you know who I mean)
Shaka Hislop
Trevor Senior

Some of the decades may overlap for which I can only aplogise.

Darius Wdowczyk

I forgot Neil Webb and Kerry Dixon from the early 80's, two players who went on to be genuine stars, both going to world cups with England.
