Lawro's Predictions

by philM » 17 Aug 2012 10:37

Here we go again...

---------------------------------------------------
Reading v Stoke
Have Reading got enough quality to stay in the Premier League? They look a little bit short to me at the moment.

Like a lot of other clubs who are going to spend a lot of time down the bottom of the table, the problem they have is in trying to persuade players to come and sign for them.

Stoke are a good example of what newly promoted sides should aspire to. Since they arrived in the top flight in 2008 they have turned themselves in to a perennially decent, hard-to-beat mid-table side.

When Reading were first promoted to the Premier League in 2006, they beat Middlesbrough 3-2 in a real thriller and made people sit up and take notice - but I cannot see that happening here.

Prediction: 1-1

I couldn't care less, i'm happy for 'pundits' to write us off - it gives us something to prove and i'm confident we will surprise a few people this season. I even think we will finish higher than Stoke this season.

I think, if we are honest, most of us look at our squad and wonder whether we have got enough to stay up (just or comfortably).

The big difference here is that a lot of these Prem pundits are ignorant of:
- our players when the season starts
- the Championship in general

One they have seen us for 6-8 weeks they will make a whole new judgment and run with that one.

To be fair a 1-1 draw is probably about right. We would hope for more but settle for not losing as would the Stokies.

Lawrenson is still a pcunt though.

To save having 36 of these threads, can this not be made into a sticky?

Oh look, Reading fans getting affronted for no reason whatsoever.

He could well be right that we are short of quality. The jury is out on that one isn’t it.

3 of those new signings are from the Championship, it could be questioned whether they will make the step up.

Lawro doesn’t like us? I am sure he doesn’t care one iota either way. The Robin Friday kitbag incident – if it is even true – occurred when he played for CARDIFF remember.

Pundits like Lawrenson and Savage stick mainly to the obvious. You can't really blame them for thinking that Reading, a team who have only signed low-price recruits and who last year did not score the most goals and did not dominate possession in many games, will struggle. I would think that myself were it not for the Brian factor. Maybe the Brian factor will desert us this year, but our manager has surprised us so many times in the past that, for the moment, I feel eerily unafraid of the premiership.

This business of Stoke being a good example has started to irk me. Pulis is a superb coach, but Stoke's spending has been erratic. They blew daft money on Kitson and Sonko, for example; I am glad we are not buying that sort of player for that sort of inflated prices. Also I don't want to see individuals of the Pennant and Woodgate sort at our club.

I also agree. But it needs to be conceded that Lawrenson had a pretty shambolic record of predicting our results when we were promoted last time. Seemingly only matched by his constant over predicting of Wolves' results in recent years.

It's one of those moments I've been really looking forward to following promotion: the first time Lawro says we'll struggle. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

tbf what he says isn't entirely wrong and he has given us a 1-1 draw against a "hard to beat mod table side"
