ManchesterRoyals From the 2005/06 team the only player i thought that was prem quality at that time was sidwell and i would rather have the 2005/06 squad compared to todays squad

For starters, record-transfer Kevin Doyle wasn't PL-qualified?

I said at the time but a few have come on and done v well and wish they were still here, prime example long think this season especially he looks real quality

Crotts The current side should be:
McCarthy
Gunter Mariappa Gorkss Shorey
McCleary Guthrie Ledgerwood Mcanuff
Pogrebnyak Roberts

However,
The current side, if we had invested sensibly, and I'm talking reasonably priced not fantasy football multi-millions should have been:
McCarthy
Simpson Mariappa Sean St Ledger Stephen Ward
Matt Phillips Charlie Adam Peter Whittingham Will Buckley
Pog Zaha
Subs: Federici, Cummings, Gorkss, Ledgerwood, Kebe, Roberts

BM should have realised that we had very few players up to Premiership standard and should have invested sensibly. We were fortunate last year and will need more luck this year to stay up, though I do not doubt BM's ability to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Bollox. You dont invest by bringing in 10 new players, and sticking everyone else on the subs bench. If we had done that I suspect we'd be on 0 points

This. Don't think there's a clear advantage btwn Cummings and Gunter, so either. I think both a) this is our best, and b) if we lost all season, this is who I would want to watch do it, which I think is important. Not impressed by Pog yet, he frustrates me to no end nearly every time he touches the ball, but I'm not stupid enough to think we've seen everything from him. Though I wouldn't mind seeing Hunt in his place.

I'd probably sub you Ledge for Guthrie, and I cant choose between McCleary and Kebe, but otherwise I'd agree

How exactly was Kevin Doyle a record-transfer at ~£75k including Long? I'm not sure you could say he was PL qualified based on one season either.

TheSiege For all that's been said above, at CB, I rather think that a Gorkss-Pearce partnership - or a Gorkss-Mariappa partnership, work better than a Pearce-Mariappa partnership!

Hate to agree with The Siege, but Gorkss was crucial against Swansea, and we missed Pearce.

Turns8 Here's a different spin on things...

I'd go 3-5-2

McCarthy
Mariappa Gorkss Pearce
McCleary Ledge/Jem Guthrie Mcanuff Shorey
Pog Hunt

We'd have a decent mix of attack minded and defensive cover in the 5 man midfield also with Guthrie in there you get the playmaker and for all of the moaners you have the drive of Mcanuff...and players who can swap position/provide cover etc..

Most teams seem to be going with 4-5-1 at the minute, so why have 4 defenders picking up one striker...play 3 defenders and get the midfield passing and retaining possession...

The midfield is the key and currently it's not performing well enough for the premier league...hence why we get out passed and out played and just seem to end up running around alot...make the ball do the work...it really can't be that hard!!

You should play less football manager

If we're struggling, bring on Le Fondre for one of the central midfielders. Hunt is a good option when Pog tires, as will Roberts be. Federici as soon as McCarthy gets injured/suspended/loses form. McCleary for Kebe and HRK for Macanuff.

Not taking form or anything like that into account, just picking what I think is the best team in the long run as OP suggested:

McCarthy

Gunter
Mariappa
Pearce
Shorey

Kebe
Guthrie
Karacan
McAnuff

Pogrebnyak
Le Fondre

Subs: Feds, Gorkks, Ledge, McCleary, Robson-Kanu, Roberts, Hunt

I don't understand why you're playing the more creative midfielder in a sweeper role infront of the back four.

Must have remembered the figure from the Wolves perspective, thought it was highest til Gylfi.

I would have

---------------McCarthy----------------

Cummings--Pearce--Mapps--Shorey

-----------L,Wood-Karacn------------

McCleary------Gurthie--------McAnuff

--------------Pogrebnyak--------------

Or

---------------McCarthy---------------

Cummings--Pearce--Mapps--Shorey

----------------L,Wood---------------

--------------- Guthrie---------------

McCleary----------------------McAnuff

--------Pogbrebnyk------Le Fondre

---------------------------- McCarthy ----------------------------

Cummings --------- Mariappa ------ Pearce --------- Shorey

McCleary --------- Guthrie ----------- Karacan --------- McAnuff

--------------- Roberts ------------ Le Fondre ---------------

But I do quite like the idea of making Pearce captain then perhaps McCleary and Kebe could start. But who knows because McAnuff is consistant in the sense that you know what you are going to get with him, whereas Kebe is the opposite.

Also wouldnt start Pogrebnyak, as im not really convinced by him yet. Is he really that much better than anyone we have already got? I think him walking straight into the starting 11 has disrupted them a little bit, and I reckon Roberts and Le Fondre would be a great partnership. Whenever they have played together they have done well but we still havent seen them start together yet.

Not sure why so many are down on a back 3, it definitely works for some teams - both Juventus & Napoli play 3 at the back and they're 1st & 2nd in Serie A. Switching to a back 3 kept Wigan up last year too.

I don't really think we have the players to make it work, but if we did go down that route I'd go:

Mariappa - Pearce - Gorkss
Cummings - Karacan - Leigertwood - McAnuff
Kebe - Pog - McCleary
