.54 is Sunderland's home attack strength. It is calculated by taking the # of goals Sunderland has scored at home this season 6 divided by the # games Sunderland has played at home 7 and then divided by the league average of goals (1.589) scored at home last season. So, 6/7 = .86 divided by 1.589 = .54. 1.17 is Sunderland's home defence strength. Sunderland has allowed 10 goals in 7 games, so 10/7 = 1.43 divided by the league average of goals allowed at home last season (1.216) = 1.17. In simple terms Sunderland has scored 46% fewer goals than the average premier league team this season and allowed 17% more than the average premier league team.

The same calculation can be performed for Readings performance on the road. Reading attack strength is the # of goals they have scored on the road divided by the # of games, hence 7/8 = .88 divided by (1.216) = .82 Reading has scored 18% fewer goals than the average premier league team. To calculate Reading's defence strength, take the # of goals Reading has allowed on the road, 14 divided by the # of games 8 = 1.75 divided by the average # of goals a home team scored last season (1.589) = 1.10 So Reading allows 10% more goals on the road than the average premier league team.

Now we have the home attack strength for Sunderland .54 and Sunderland home defence strength 1.17 and vice versa we have Readings road attack strength .82 and road defence strength 1.10.

So we take Sunderlands home attack .54 multiplied x Readings road defence 1.10, .54 x 1.10 = 0.594078 multiplied x the average # of goals scored by a home team last season 1.589 to get 0.94399 which I then round up to the nearest whole number in this case 1.

Perform the same calculation for Reading. Reading's road attack .82 multiplied x Sunderland's home defence 1.17 = 0.966128 multiplied by the average # of goals by an away team last season (1.216) = 1.174812 which I then round down to the nearest whole number in this case 1.

So based on the these calculation I believe that Sunderland-Reading will end in a 1-1 draw. This just might be the coordinates to buried treasure. Below is the calculation for Mondays Fulham-Newcastle match.
