Back from the Game/pub/computer: Newcastle

by Stuka » 19 Jan 2013 17:18

Watched at my local via moody satellite.

Game of two halves. Kebe was great and I say that in spite of him being my favourite player anyway. He adapted into a defender in the last few mins.

Great first away win to notch up. Hats off to those of you who travelled up.

Watched online coverage - Ledge had a decent game. Akpan looked good too and kelly is class. ALF scored 2 typical poacher's goals.

I think RFC should award treble Royalty points for this game for anyone who went to Sunderland and Newcastle. Would be a cracking gesture and cost the club nowt

Indeed especially when it's winter and games are prone to last minute postponement.

Thought Kelly was superb today and a MASSIVE improvement on Gunter. Good on the ball, good positional play, supports Kebe in attack and he's strong! Did you
see the way he bullied Guittierez off the ball. Think he's going to be key in the attempt to stay up. My MOTM.

Other than that thought Afeds made some excellent saves, Kebe fought hard defensively and effectively set up two goals. Brilliant finishing as ever from Alfie.

I also thought Guthrie had a very good game, some clever passes and Pog worked his socks off.]

This is possible people!!!!!!!

Agreed, weakest point was McAnuff in central midfield with 2 other wingers, looked much more stable and a threat after Akpan took over in the middle

Aided a little though by Pardew's masterful tactical decision to remove Marveaux and Cabaye

Great result and really didn't see us winning after the first half. To be honest, I didn't think we were bad (Ref was) just Newcastle really got in to us and when they scored, they sat back.

The best second half this season, kept going, kept the ball, passed and took our chances.

Legs was my MOTM, I have been very critical of him this season but that break did him some real good.

Federici kept us in it and looks as if he is back to the Federici we know. Unlucky not to be MOTM but Legs deserves it more for a great central defensive play.

Kelly had a great debut, similar to that when Griffin signed for us in the championship.

McAnuff is not a a centre midfielder, did better out wide but McCleary did well against an excellent RB.

Just need to keep going now!

Amazing!! Sat here in Newcastle Yates' after being sat with home fans during the game - i need to jump around!!

Kind of reminiscent of the Everton game - we should have been 2/3 behind at HT. Cisse missed a couple really good chances, Feds was in the right place for us. Great save from that first half Cisse header. Then second half we really dominated from kick off. Can't remember any Newcastle chances aside from the Ameobi sitter that he really should have put away.

Legs did a great job for us and Akpan threw himself around - looks really promising. Kelly also threw himself into a few challenges and got booked for one - the kind of physical presence we need.

Brian made the right subs at the right time and conversely Pardew's were terrible - he should have gone for it at 1-0 but instead tried to hold onto a 1-0 lead for 30mins. Then went on to take off Cabaye and the Newc fans around me were fuming! No creativity left on the pitch and it showed.

Great second half performance after largely weathering the storm in the first - well deserved 3pts.

Excellent day to be a Reading fan today.

Newcastle played well first half but Reading hung in there and by the second half the momentum had changed and Brian’s substitutions won the day.

Fed - 9 - MOTM outstanding today. LOL at all those who write him off earlier this season
Kelly- 7 - very good. Loved it when he completely took Gutierrez out.
Pearce - 8 - comfortable
Mariappa - 8 - also looks every inch the PL player now
Harte - 7 - LOL at me thinking he had had his day. He really did well today
Guthrie - 7 - perhaps not the influence of last week but did well
Leigertwood 8 - very good today - again so many of our fans just write players off without reason
McAnuff - 6 - perhaps not great going forwards but was brilliant defensively especially as we held on for the win
McCleary - 6 - not so influential today and shame he appeared to get injured
Kebe - 8 - good going forwards and defensively. I think he is now playing his best ever football since he came to RFC
Pog - 6 - huffed and puffed and tried hard
ALF - 8 - what can you say - super sub
Akpan - 6 - looked ok but did he mean the assist. I think not.

Brian - 9 - great subs and tactics
Ref - 4 - really poor IMO.

I thought we were great second half after Feds kept us in it and he was a virtual spectator after that. Kelly was a beast and he certainly thinned out Gutierrez. Rest of the back four were solid; great diagonal ball from Legs to get Kebe away for ALF's first and he was disciplined throughout. Akpan is raw, but I think there is a bit of the Yaya Toure about him. Nice little unselfish run by Pog to isolate the full back against Jobi to get the cross in for the winner and a beautiful composed finish by the ultimate poacher. Great result and fair play to the 900, who were in good voice.

Bet the 1,000 fans that went are delighted. Fair play to them.

Adam le fondre is an absolute hero and is the ultimate super sub. He doesn't do this when he stars games but when he comes on he makes the most of tired defenders.

Stephen kelly was solid at RB. Akpan looked a bit below average, good physical presence, but was panicked on the ball and needs more composure but that will come with time. He looks promising.

Though Federici was definitely my MOTM. Without him we would of been out of it by half time. Well done Fedders your proving all the doubters wrong.

Second half we looked like a premiership team. Well done Reading and well done Mcdemott! Onwards and upwards! COYR
