Today was awful, embarrassing and sad. There are so many things that are good about Reading football club but being capable of competing in the Premier League is not one of them
Leighterwood is just too slow and not skilful enough for the PL so why the f*ck he starts every week in beyond me. He gives the ball away far more than he completes a pass and so it was today. He gave the ball away for both goals and nearly every other time he got it.
McAnuff also lacks the first touch and final bit of quality needed for this league but at least he looks interested for the whole match which is more than you can say for "Ledge". McAnuff looked busy today but seemed to feel the need to beat the same player two or three times before attempting a cross or shot.
We made Aston Villa look like Barcelona today, They passed the ball around with confidence and ease where as we either hoofed the ball or simply failed to complete an easy pass and gave the ball away.
We had a goal ruled off side that might have been controversial but even if it had been a draw, this would have been like wallpapering over the cracks.
Taylor - not at fault for the goals but he's not Feds
Harte - too old and too slow - got skinned nearly every time.
Marriappa - solid
Pearce - same
Kelly - better than Harte but still didn't have his best game
McAnuff - see above. Brian is too loyal to him. He's been found out at this level
Leighterwood - oxf*rd awful - leave now please
Akpan - worked hard and did well. let down by Leighterwood
Robson Kanu - our best midfielder today. Worked hard but more importantly, was effective, especially in the first half
Hunt - headless chicken
Alfie - worked hard but too little service today to make a difference to the score line.
Brian - too loyal to certain players - his time should be up!
There is no way back from here and the manager has to go, whether thats now or at the end of the season probably doesn't matter but go he must.

The abusing of McAnuff today was embarassing and cringeworthy.
A lot of people there today don't deserve to have a decent football team to watch.

As I drove to the ground and heard the team news I was convinced we were doomed before a ball was even kicked. We simply are not good enough at this level to play 4-4-2 and anyone who thinks we are is entirely deluded. The one good patch we had in January was when we played 4-3-2-1 with Guthrie in the 3. I think Legs, Akpan and Guthrie as the obvious call for the midfield 3 but for whatever reason Guthrie was excluded again. Madness. Villa dominated midfield and deservedly won the game – even though they are the poorest side I have seen at the Madstad this season.
It is not Legs fault. He was effectively playing in a one man midfield before he got subbed. After he went off we were effectively playing 4-0-6 instead of the 4-3-2-1 that we have on occasions succeeded with.
The fault for this is 100% with the manager in my opinion - not the players and it was unfair of the crowd to give some of the players such a hard time.
I don't want Brain sacked as he is proven at Championship level, but the sad truth is that we are Championship Club, with a Championship ownership (no money spent), and a Championship squad with a Championship manager and it is not fair on another team that we are taking up one of the 20 PL spots as we don't deserve to be here. At least now we can plan for another Championship season where we belong.

I think people are being harsh on McAnuff today. Created a goal, created another offside goal. Made a chance for HRK. Earned their full back a booking. Plenty of positives.
This team I think has flashes of quality out wide, if not the consistency. It also has strikers who can finish, and CBs who can defend relatively well.
What is lacks so much is composure on the ball ability to keep possession in CM; Legs is obviously the worst defender. Because of this, the wingers don't have enough opportunities to create chances for our strikers. The defence is under constant pressure as when they win the ball it comes straight back at them.
95% of our problems this season have stemmed from consistently playing central midfielders who can't keep possession.

The match thread suggests we failed to defend strikers dropping off to the pen spot / runners from midfield arriving there yet again. For those of you who are gluttons for punishment and were there, was that the case with the goals today? Lambert seemed to be saying they were just very well worked goals, but it doesn't really ring true to me. Our defence from midfield this season has been some of the worst I've ever seen.

That's exactly what I was thinking. And this against a team that couldn't get the better of a League Two side over two games.

The most embarrassing thing today was the fans.
As well as abusing McAnuff from the first whistle, booing and abusing Leigertwood, who was brilliant for us for 18 months, has been no worse than anybody else this season and scored the crucial goal last season, while cheering Guthrie, who has offered absolutely nothing this season and refused to play a few months ago just demonstrates how thick, pathetic and plastic many Reading fans are, and I'll be delighted when half of the ‘fans’ fúck off again next season.

The second villa goal was an embassassment, we let them pass the ball in front of us, must have been 20+ finally Harte was left exposed with 2 against one, Pearce fluffed his clearance, inevitable result

I agree with this. We were way too open down our left, yet again, because (a) Ian Harte is too slow, and (b) Ledge was out only defensive midfield player. We should have played Shorey and Guthrie in a 4-5-1. Baffles me why we've gone back to 4-4-2, having previously got much better results with 4-5-1 following a long losing streak with, er, 4-4-2. If we'd had Ledge and Guthrie sitting in front of the back four, with Akpan (or HRK) in front of them, and Alf up front.. we would have been much more solid. and would have stood a much better chance today.
.. and yes, Jobi ran his socks off today, and was one of our best players.
