The French youth teams have been highly competitive at all recent tournaments. The strength and depth of their national pool is incredible - for Olise to get a call up here is very impressive (or they are doing it as a low cost way of swaying his final decision on eligibility in case he turns into a star)

It is great for the lad but should be noted that most teams, including France, do not send anything near their strongest squads to Toulon given that is just an invitational tournament. Good experience for him and a chance to show that he could break into the fuller squad.

You say that but this squad Southgate took in 2016 was pretty strong.

Goalkeepers: Angus Gunn (Manchester City), Jordan Pickford (Sunderland)

Defenders: Calum Chambers (Arsenal), Ben Chilwell (Leicester City), Brendan Galloway (Everton), Kortney Hause (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Dominic Iorfa (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Jack Stephens (Southampton), Matt Targett (Southampton)

Midfielders: Lewis Baker (Vitesse Arnhem, loan from Chelsea), Matt Grimes (Swansea City), Nathaniel Chalobah (Napoli, loan from Chelsea), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea), John Swift (Chelsea), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Forwards: Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Kasey Palmer (Chelsea) Nathan Redmond (Norwich City), Duncan Watmore (Sunderland), Cauley Woodrow (Fulham)

Yep that is a strong squad but the picking a weak squad comment is normally true as Toulon takes place every year and is always sandwiched by more important tournaments.

Toulon is actually an under 21 tournament, though this year it is an Under 22 competition - France are sending their u18s as their u20s are in the World Cup - England are sending an u20 side as the u21s are in the Euros - Portugal sending U19s. It's not a FIFA affliated tournament and games only last 80 mins rather than 90.

So whilst it will be great experience for Olise, it is the perfect competition for France to take a look at a player who may have only just come on their radar in what is a prestigious but ultimately meaningless end of season competition.

It basically only comes into effect next season, first professional contract is maximum 3 years.

Good news that Claudio osorio signing a deal too, think he's been quite highly rated too.

Seems quite a few of the 15-16 yr olds have played for various England age groups over the last couple of years too

Loader and Barrett have been called up by England U20 and Ireland U21 respectively so we have three players at the Toulon tournament. Josh Sims is also playing for England and so are a few of the young players we've been linked to on loan. Dwight McNeil looks like the star man.

Nelson Abbey and Malachi Talent-Aryeetey will be signing professional contracts in due course too. Nelson's a Woodley lad, played in a couple of local tournaments with WJ Junior last summer. Really come on again this year apparently. Big, strong lad with great feet.

Always thought Barrett was more like 22/23 years old considering he made his debut around four years ago, shocked me that he's still only 20!

For our national players, Olise started and played 89 minutes against Qatar under-23's in a 2-0 victory

Loader came on as a substitute against Japan U22 as they fell to a 2-1 defeat

Josh Barrett didn't feature

Recall him making his debut in McD's last game away at Blackburn.

Was a home game. We conceded a last minute equaliser or loser.... but that was a sub appearance rather than full debut.

Yeah, was Preston (H), came on at half time and played very well. Think he would have kicked on had McDermott stayed but we'll never know

Personally think the club would have been in a stronger position now if Brian had stayed (either time) but as you say we’ll never know.
