Yep, seems like Samuels wants to be somewhere where he is likely to be first choice, so likely dropping down a division or two,

Bowen seems to expect/be hopeful that we'll have signed a new LB by early next week.

Seen a tweet suggesting we've been downgraded to Cat 2 to from Cat 1 for academy status.

SeverL clubs have been downgraded but at the time we weren’t one of them.
We’d have to have failed an audit (and I think you would normally get a chance to correct any problem) or requested the downgrade for financial reasons, which would have all sorts of repercussions

Reading are now a Category 2 academy side.

Looks pretty official, especially if Henry Knight has broken the story.

This is tripe, Reading’s u21/3 academy are playing in PL2 and as far as I am aware you have a cat 1 academy to play in PL2.

I suspect Morgan was using more than his fair share of irony. RG30 has been taken in though.

Sorry - probably missed an emoji off ...

Trouble is, a few more of these have started popping up on Twitter (but again from nobody of any note). Are they all one and the same person or just believe what others have posted?

Ha, fair enough.

I am still calling bullshit on this - a few random twitter idiots + school holidays = nonsense.

The fact none of the regular journalists have mentioned a peep about it, speaks volumes, imo.

Maybe a consolidation season or two in cat 2 will help refocus minds. Could be a positive.

How long have we had Cat 1 status, 10 years? If it costs £5m pa to apply for Cat 1 status, Have we seen a positive ROI from it? We have no divine right to be up there rubbing shoulders with Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenals academies.

Look at the positives, clubs like Brentford totally ditched their academy in favour of developing premier league outcasts and rapidly developing players in the lower divs.

We will still have an academy and will no doubt apply for Cat 1 status once the financial side of things get better over time.

Iirc it was about £2m a few years ago. And yes, we've easily seen a return on investment. £8m + goals and assists from Olise. Fees / compensation for some of Richards, Stacey, Hyam, Dickie, Fosu etc.

Many appearances from Holmes, McIntyre, Richards, Rinomhota, Hector, Cooper, Taylor, Southwood and many others.

It's the one part of the club that consistently delivers, and the cost can be largely excluded from financial fair play.

I’m fairly confident it’s closer to £5m Ian.

Most of the players you have listed left for nothing and had no impact on our first team whatsoever. Did we really get much in return from developing Taylor, Dickie, Hyam, Fosu, Stacey etc?

I wouldn’t say there’s ‘easily’ been a return on investment at all and there’s clearly a reason why they aren’t choosing to reapply this year.

Like I said, at least they haven’t scrapped it altogether.

Edit: a quick google search throws up it was £2.4-£4.8m in 2012 and some clubs claiming it’s now costing £8m-£10m per year for elite Cat 1 status. I guess thats one of the reasons why only 4/5/6 clubs outside the top flight go for it each season?

When you quote costs to ‘apply’ do you mean in order to run a Cat 1 Academy that is the annual running cost ? You make it sound like that is some kind of fee.
You suggest we have decided to withdraw, rather than we’ve failed an audit. We’ve just appointed senior staff at the Academy, seems odd to suddenly get rid of them.
Timing seems odd. Other clubs were downgraded a couple of months ago. A decision (who ever may have made it) a couple of weeks before the season will have all sorts of impacts on fixtures, player contracts, staff contracts etc.
We need a more plausible source than a random tweet but all seems very odd until we see more (if there’s is more to see....)

Going by recent history I'd much rather the club spend £7-8 million a year running the academy than have that money for extra transfers.

Brighton are finalising a deal for u16 striker Princewill Ehibhatiomhan as he rejected a scholarship at Reading fc. He had interest from Norwich, Everton and West Ham but decided to go with Brighton.

Be interesting to see the reasons why we are now Cat2

Not nec the end of the world by any means but interesting timing and be nice to see whose decision it was

Annoying about P Ehib. He was rated. Wonder if it’s related to us going to cat2
