With HRK now out for the beginning of the season, how far away are we from declaring a full injury crisis before we've even kicked a meaningful ball?

Pog getting injured might do it. Or Tshibola and Akpan. Or Obita.

http://www.getreading.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/reading-fc-star-garath-mccleary-7572125

Garath McCleary has revealed that he played the final two months of last season with a broken back.

Royals’ winger suffered the injury during the 1-1 draw with Yeovil Town at Madejski Stadium on March 1.

It wasn’t picked up at the time, however, and he went on to play a part in all but one of Reading’s remaining 13 games of the campaign.

“I had a fracture in my vertebrae,” said McCleary.

“So I played for two-and-a-half months with it which I shouldn’t have done.

“Playing with a fracture, you’re always going to make it worse. “

The true extent of McCleary’s injury was finally discovered after it was spotted in a scan a month before he was due to return for pre-season training.

He has since undergone surgery to fix the problem and is not expected to return until the end of October.

“It was finally found four weeks before pre-season,” said the former Nottingham Forest player.

“No-one wants to have an operation, but it is something I had to do.

“It was a minor op. It was non-invasive so that’s a good thing.

“It would have been better if it had been spotted earlier because then I wouldn’t have to miss the start of the new season.

“But it’s something that I have to deal with. Hopefully I can come back stronger and quicker than the expected time.”

He was very lucky there. Surprised he hadn't had a scan earlier though.

Doesn't sound like it was actually a broken back.....
Interesting that his operation was 'non invasive', wonder what that actually entails.

He fractured a vertebrate. Sounds much much more serious than it actually is. Don't get me wrong. For a professional sportsman its certainly serious. But it's not the "oh my god he'll never walk again" you might think from it being a broken back.

It means the surgeon decided not to give him a wank while he performed the operation.

Yep - hence I said how lucky he was - it could have been far worse.

Is McCarthy injured? Or did Feds look ace in training so Adkins went with him?

No injury, there's nothing between the two at the moment and McCarthy has had a lot more game time over the last year so only fair Feds gets a try.

Feds is playing because he is comfortable with the ball at his feat and his good & effective distribution helps the team massively with regards to keeping possession.

It's probably just as simple as fed doing better in preseason. Otherwise he'd have played last season if it was tactical.
