Fans falling out of love with away games?

by No Fixed Abode » 27 Mar 2014 11:22

Reading are probably in the top 10 home attendance figures in the Championship.

How come away attendances are so poor, comparatively speaking?

Economically hard times? Isolated location (football wise) means it can cost a lot more for RFC fans to travel to away games than, say, London teams to visit other london teams etc?

People having had relatively good times recently as an RFC fan with Divisional wins and PL seasons meaning away games in the Championship don't mean as much in the excitement stakes for some fans?

Why do you think TMK?

Bunch of middle class fans, just generally not as good as being fans as more established teams from dirt-poor no-mark towns.

That is the answer he's looking for, right?

When has our away following been particularly good? I'm not sure lower placing in average away attendence than home is anything new so I don't see how it signals a decline.

apples and oranges.

In terms of things to be concerned about, RFC-wise, this ranks just below 'awful quality of beer on sale in concourses'.

The answer, certainly for some in my age bracket for whom away game novelty has worn off.

"Fans falling out of love with THE PRICE of away games".

If you're paying 30 odd quid for a ticket, 30 odd quid for the train or petrol, and spending your whole day travelling to Yorkshire and back to be entertained for an hour and a half; then you should at least QUESTION your priorities.
The days of cheap (ish) tickets and cheap (ish) travel is over. You're almost a mug for going to away games nowadays.

Depends on the location of the away games though doesn't it....?

We have 10 away games within 100 miles (as the crow flies) - take Barnsley as an example, they have 15 games that fit the same criteria....

Away following tends to drop in proportion to the travel required to get there....

The club is still bound by small time football traditions.

A load of new middle England dwellers swelling the town's population who may like to pop to the Madstad but don't have enough affinity with football or the town to travel away much.

lol at a chelsea fan starting this thread on a Reading board.

do remind us of chelsea's away attendances pre-abramovich, and while you're at it, the early 90's - just for laughs!

We're not a hard-core following kind of club. We're sponsored by Waitrose, I guess that's all you need to know.

Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is debatable.

To be honest, 'I don't know' is my answer. Away games much more fun. The real question here is why do so many people go to home games?

At the risk of playing right into Kes' hands, it's the changing demographic of the modern football fan I fear.

It's Mondeo man taking his kids to the game.
