Roman was possibly more about reputation laundering (see also the Qataris at City) - a point Mathew Syed makes here to the hilarious consternation of Jim White and cronies - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmCtci6cen8

Don't be silly, football is constantly under media scrutiny, if you want to launder cash there would be much easier ways of doing it.

Anyone got further details on the apparent British Bid.... Consortium led by Keith Scott perhaps???

Sky Sports understands a British consortium was overlooked in the battle to secure a takeover of Reading.

The Championship club are on the verge of being taken over by a Thailand consortium, fronted by businessman Samrit Bunditkitsada.

The club had been looking for new investors for several months and held talks with more than one party.

Former majority shareholder Anton Zingarevich bought 51 per cent of the Royals in May 2012 and had been due to complete a full takeover in October last year.

However, the Russian pulled out of the deal and the club have been looking for new investment ever since.

An American consortium were bemused that their offer for Reading was not considered in favour of the reported Thai consortium, who have been struggling to close the deal after Reading accepted their bid over the Americans.

It is also now understood that a British consortium lead by two well-known and experienced British football directors had also shown their ability to fund a well-structured offer for the purchase of the club, but were dismissed by the shareholders in favour of the unknown Thai group wishing to buy Reading.

Na, football's a complicated black hole of wages, agent fees, off shore accounts etc etc. One of the better places i can think of to 'loose' a couple of million here or there especially if you have oh...say a giant music festival in the middle of summer completely out of the blue.

It's not like a Premier League Manager was recently up for Tax Evasion FFS. This stuff simply doesn't happen under the sort of media scrutiny football has to put up with.

Yep, that certainly stopped Abramovich.

He had no need to 'launder' money as he had plenty in the bank for all to see. Those who launder money hide what they have. His as said was about profile and tax schemes (which isn't the same as laundering). How he got his fortune is more open to question but he has never been convicted of anything so you should take care of accusations thrown around without actual evidence.

Either way you cut it -despite the jealousy of every non Chelsea supporter- he has been the ideal owner. Rich, willing to throw money around and actually enjoys football. Some may say he meddles (without any proof) but who wouldn't ? If I spunked £1b on a 'toy' I'd expect to be able to have my say and say what I damn well choose.

He bought the club in 2003 so he's a stay'er too.

Seem to remember similar assurances being made late last year about the disappearance of Anton.

Re. money laundering - there's money laundering by criminal gangs and there's money laundering by more respectable citizens .... I'd say Roman A falls into the latter. It's turning money gained by questionable but not outright criminal means into respectability/status etc. in another country.

Hi fortune was accumul8d by bribery, corruption and quasi-st8 legitim8d thefts and has been maintained in the same way. The purpose of buying Chelsea was (1) to move a large amount of money out of Russia (and, to a lesser extent, Switzerland) into a cash business and a series of assets which could be sold in the future to show a legitimate source of his wealth and (2) to have sufficient western profile to avoid being the next Khordokovsky.

I beg to differ. Dodgy dealings happen all of the time in football. Look at how the world cup ended up in Qatar. It's just about how well you do it and how well you get away with it.

Money Laundering.. those accusations have followed Samuelson for years in the States, and then we see a well run club end up in the mess we're in within 2 years of him being here, and some still fancy his involvement with Phoenix?
