Which moment in RFC history do you wish you could erase?

by floyd__streete » 05 Feb 2015 18:09

Rumblestix :?: BRING IT ON :?: Lenny Henry :?:

Which moment do you wish could be airbrushed from history and what would the ultimate effect have been of your history-changing cause :?:

I'm going with the Pipe-in-Pocket incident, vs Notts County in 94/95. During the 20 minute delay, our players stood around and warmed up for the restart half-heartedly. We won the game but Archie Lovell pulled up with a hamstring strain. Our striking options then made the current crop look like the Hungarian 1954 side and so we struggled through several weeks with Jimmy Quinn battling sciatica and I think we even played Scott Taylor upfront during some games. With a fit Lovell we pick up a point or 4 more prior to Christmas and the signing of Lee Nogan and we pip Middlesbrough to the Division 1 title on the final day with a 2-1 win over Charlton.

True. It has been a pivotal and embarassing episode in the history of this club.

it's 1997 and Jimmy Quinn and Micky Gooding's contracts have not been renewed. Freshly retired from playing, Berndt Schuster applies for the vacant manager's job. We give it to Terry Bullivant. The rest is history

The pre Bolton playoff final training week in Spain, that saw half the team pick up injuries and our dreams of top flight football probably dashed for ever.

Kevin Doyle getting injured at Everton, and effectively ending his career in any meaningful sense

Releasing Charlie Austin

Nameless that is fantastic, absolutely fantastic.

Meanwhile memory to erase, RFC selling Robin Friday, and to Cardiff for a mere £60,000

Saturday 21st September 1996 Reading 1 Crystal Palace 6. The 6th goal Palace scored, their scorer looking back at the Southbank, arm raised with huge smug grin on face waving at us !!!

Indeed selling Robin Friday to Cardiff was about as insane as it gets.

In a parallel Archie`s penalty would have hit the back of the Wembley net grrr mutter

Agreeing Sidwell's wage demands. No Fae. No Cisse. Decent midfield. No relegation.

The obvious answer is the pen @ Wembley though. Just gutting.

Just thought of another one that was pretty gutting - the Walcott goal to make it 4-1 in the league cup. Had we shut up shop & got to HT 4-0 up we'd have got through. Not really got over that one yet actually - talk about wasted opportunity to get to Wembley for a cup final.
