Youngsters debuts

by Harpers So Solid Crew » 21 Feb 2016 06:23

Young players who really looked class when you first saw them make the first team.
Not having to be the actual debut but soon after if not.

Stand outs for me over the years.

Steve Hetzke

Ady Williams

Neil Webb

James Lambert

Must be more, but saw all of those either on their debut or soon after, and they just looked good enough for the team right from day one

Adie Williams was awful when he started, scrawny kid who ran around looking lost and looked like he'd turned up at the wrong game !
These days it's rare to see a youngster play for the first team who isn't already pretty well known. Of recent debutants you'd say the standout impact was Fosu but Keown also looked impressive this year in preseason. (Not technically his debut)
Obviously Gylfi was world class from day 1......

I thought Kuhl looked standout.

Cooper obviously.
Tanner. Obita maybe.

I recall Bas Savage looked decent on his debut. Think it was League Cup v West Ham or Chelsea. Don't remember him looking any good subsequently.

Say Kerry Dixon make his first appearance for us in the "stiffs" and I could see straightaway that he was a bit special.

Not ours but related, I saw Michael Thomas playing against us for Pompey, out of position, a scrawny left back but, boy did he ooze class. He was only there for 3 games before Arsenal recalled him and he soon made himself a first team regular.

I saw Matt le Tissier's debut for Saints.
Can't remember if he was any good.

Maybe it was because he was played as a right-back rather than in his proper position.

He may not have come through our ranks (Margate?) but Tommy Jenkins was a young player who made such an impression that he was gone in the same season.
Lawrie Sanchez looked good from the off and of course he was still at school.

Remember seeing Steven Gerrard make his England Under 21 debut (at the Mad Stad) and thinking he was going to be an amazing player.

I don't think it was his debut but Jake Cooper was awesome against Everton (and Lukaku in particular) in the League Cup earlier this season.

I'd add Lawrie Sanchez to the list

From my days of old. Saw both Darren Caskey and Stuart Beavon make their debuts for Spurs .

Sol Campbell made his debut as a striker for Spurs as a sub. Then moved to left full back back. Eventually becoming a centre back. Glen Hoddle also springs to mind.

Michael Antonio looked decent, albeit very raw, when he first came along. Always thought it was a shame we didn't keep hold of him.
Wonder whatever happened to .... oh bugger

With the greater access to, wall to wall coverage and hype of the kids these days the debut appearance and impact of first impressions is largely a thing of the past isn't it? At least for those who pay attention to the coverage.

IIRC Mark Holzman made his debut in a cup game (I'm thinking Slough) and looked very good. I might have got that very wrong though, but he was one of those youngsters who looked really good for a while and then disappeared a bit.

I think that's a very small portion though. Certainly had a lot of fans around me wondering who Aaron Kuhl was when he came on against Huddersfield. They were won around by the end of the match - probably the best debut I can remember (not sure Tanner's really counts).

Saw Siddy's second game for the club away to Burnley when he scored two in a 5-2 win and thought he would be a great signing.

Tshibola's debut was a bit shit tbf. Ten minutes on the wing in a 3-0 defeat away at Forest, or something along those lines, wasn't it?

Gr8 first start though, I'll give you that.

4-0 wasn't it?

Seem to remember Kuhl had a pretty good game that day though on his 1st start.
