Squad 16/17

by Crux » 21 Apr 2016 19:11

Our current quad of players considered first team players is as follows.

Al Habsi
Bond

Taylor
Obita
Gunter
Cooper
Ferdinand
McShane
Hector

Mccleary
HRK
John
Piazon
Norwood
Williams
Quinn
Tshibola
Evans
Fernandez

Vydra
Cox
Rakels
Kermorgant

Out of that, at the end of the season the following loans leave

Hector
Piazon
Taylor
John
Fernandez
Vydra

Out of contract players probably leaving

HRK
Cox
Ferdinand

That's 9 first team players gone. Along with this, I think williams will be off and their appears to be interest in Norwood, Cooper and Obita.

Not a panic post and I will be happy to see the back of the majority but my word we will be short on numbers. The Thais will have to spend to enable us to have a squad that can compete.

This summer is pivotal.

Edit: Not sure if cox is out of contract.

Al Habsi
Bond

Gunter
McShane
Keown

McCleary
Quinn
Tshibola
Evans
Kuhl
Fosu-Henry

(Cox)
Rakels
Kermorgant
Samuel
Tanner

Start out with the above and we move on. Hopefully with a bit of transfer money in from the sale of Norwood, Williams and Cooper.

Crux their appears to be interest in Norwood, Cooper and Obita.

Seen far better players in the Championship this year. I wouldn't get too excited this early about bids coming in . Though I'm struggling to fit Norwood into the formation we are developing. Hopefully McCleary will be pushed forward on Saturday with Gunter returning.

I would rather watch 11 blokes picked at random from around the stadium than the shower of shit I have suffered through this season.

I'm reasonably happy with the squad. A few good additions would be fine.

GK: Al-Habsi, Bond, Ward
RB: Gunter, Keown, McCleary, Watson
LB: Obita, Taylor, Owusu
CB: McShane, Cooper, Dickie
CB:????, Keown, Hyam
CM: Norwood, Kuhl
RM: Tshibola, Williams, Evans
LM: Quinn, Evans
AM: Cox, Tanner
RW: McCleary, Stacey
LW:?????, Fosu
RF: McCleary, Samuel, Stacey
LF:????, Fosu, maybe Rakels
CF:?????, Kermorgant
ST: Rakels, Cox, Samuel.

If we want to play with wingers, we've got quite a lot of work to do. But diamond or 4-3-3 and it's pretty close, though a couple we have maybe wasted.

Loan players: return the lot.

Others:

Keep:
Al Habsi
Gunter
McShane
Cooper
Obita
Evans
Norwood
Quinn
McCleary
Rakels
Kermogant

Accept HRK is going. Expect a couple of them to attract some attention (eg Norwood, Cooper).
Hope Tshbola gets fit.
Try to offload the rest of the 1st team regular squad. That won't be easy unless we let some go on a free or very cheaply.

Add in some of the U21s and then get a couple of high quality additions.

Looks like Fosu is a fan favourite at Stanley much like Tshibola was at Hartlepool last season. Would love to see him given a chance next season.

I saw that as well, it is promising. Stacey seems to be doing OK as well but certainly not to the extent of Fosu, so hopefully Fosu can play a part next season, wonder if Stacey needs another loan. Not many else who could arguably make the step up next season, Samuel is an obvious one, Tanner has been in and out of the Plymouth squad lately so maybe he's not quite there.

Kuhl is out of contract and not really being given a shot in these, effectively meaningless games, so it will be interesting if they give him a new contract or not, arguably they persisted with Jake Taylor for longer and Kuhl was supposed to have better potential, not long ago there were rumours of £2m interest from Man City. Then there's Barrett, the club seem to think highly of him so I suspect he'll either make the step up or get a loan spell.

Stacey and Fosu do seem to be making the most of their loans, which is great to hear.

I haven't seen too much of what Stacey is doing but the two goals he's scored are crackers and he looks like my kind of winger so I really hope he gets involved in the first team next season.

Fosu is possibly more eye catching, on his day, but perhaps a little less a McDermott type player but if he can kick on after his loan half as well as Tshibola then he'll give McDermott something to think about too.

buy taylor

& left wing/forward
central defender
striker/CF

im pretty sure we will sell someone, if not more
so we will need to have a look if replacements are required on a case by case basis,

if Williams goes- I think we might be ok
if cooper goes we will need another CB on top of the one already on the list

if norwood cox mcleary or obita goes then they will need to be replaced

Fill in the blanks (try and keep Ferdinand IMO) and I think we should be okay. Offload anyone I haven't mentioned and isn't on loan/out of contract.

As above, lets have Tish, Stacey, Fosu, Kuhl, Keown, Novakovich, Tanner and Samuels all properly join the first team squad with Cooper, loan out the rest and see what happens in my opinion. Don't let any of them go yet except maybe Liburd, they're all 20 or younger I believe.

I think I'd be happy with Tish, Fosu, Tanner and Samuel in and around the first team squad next season. They have all proven themselves at the level they're playing at and received excellent reviews wherever they've been on loan at so should now be given a chance in our first team.

Stacey I'd like to see out on loan once more as he's only done it over a few games at Carlisle. A season of consistent L2/L1 football will do him the world of good and give us an indication of whether he's ready to make the step up.

Kuhl has had a wasted season and a half, his time up in Scotland was a disaster but hopefully we can ship him out to a L2/L1 side and get him regular games. Sadly his early promise doesn't look to be coming to much at the moment based on what we've seen and there's no question in my mind he shouldn't be anywhere near the first team at the moment because he's done nothing to justify it since his baptism of fire.

Novakovich and Keown - I'd be wary of throwing them in at the deep end and would like to see them loaned for a season to see if they're ready for the step up. Novakovich has only played four games in the Conference this season (and Cheltenham didn't renew his loan which tells its own story in some ways) and Keown has had just two first team appearances in his entire football league career.

Keep Liburd around as a fifth striker with the odd month out on loan as well? I thought Keown had done pretty well in pre-season this year so not sure he's that far off the first team. Also expect Barrett to be in and around again next season. Surprised he hasn't had a few more minutes off the bench in recent games actually, playing at the top of the diamond

I think we will re-sign Cox and Ferdinand. Can't see them having too many other options, providing they can be convinced to accept an average Championship pay deal.

Agree with pretty much all of this. I suppose you could make the case that if Norwood does go then Kuhl is probably the nearest like for like replacement already here. He'd need to have an impressive pre-season though because this season has been a bit of a washout. Some adversity might actually be a good thing for him though provided it's just a blip.

1st team squad

Ideal requirement is 2 specialists in each position

Assumption is that Ferdinand and HRK will move on in the summer so not included

Also expecting Kuhl to go

GK : Al Habsi, Bond
RB : Gunter, Keown
LB : Obita, ???
CB : McShane, Cooper, ???, ???
LW : Fosu, Tanner
RW : McLeary, Stacey
CM : Tishbola, Quinn, Norwood, Evans
FW : Samuel, Kermorgant, Rakels, Cox

Utility cover : Williams (obvious CM is preferred but can play defence at a push and has been used as wide midfielder)

I note that of the above Cox may not have his contract renewed and there seems to be a reasonable chance that Williams will be sold along with possible moves for Cooper, Norwood and Obita

Anyway the clear priority is CB. Looks like we need 2, one being an experienced pro and the other a bit of a youngster (Bolton's Rob Holding appears to be attracting a good deal of interest from Reading for that slot).

Really need a senior, proven left winger from somewhere as well as what could turn out to be a couple of left backs.

Strikers are still a concern and even if we have the 4 players above and Liburd and Novakovich in the wings (Liburd really needs to have a quality pre season) another quality striker would be really welcome

As regards CM, don't think there is much need to bring more to the club unless the quality is that much better (that said I'd still like to get Charlton's Icelander - Gudmundsson(?) - in).

Of the youngsters, those that will be ear marked for loan and those ear marked to challenge the first team I think will be decided by how well they do in pre-season. From what I've seen and heard this year, Samuel, Tanner and Fosu are probably the nearest to regular first team chances next season (I see Cooper as a regular 1st teamer now). While Liburd may not be too far away either but not sure how he's done during his loan nor what he can actually offer so I think a good pre season from him is probably essential. Either way he really needs to be playing 1st team football somewhere next season.

Finally I still think we are crying out for a top quality goalkeeper from somewhere (Southend's Bentley for instance or that bloke McCarthy at Palace looks useful) so we can get Bond out getting regular league football on loan somewhere.
