Back on topic for a moment Bet Victor has Jimmy Kebe at 16/1.
Now, that is an appointment that would cheer me up.

3points I genuinely wonder if a fan could do as good a job as a pro these days, assuming there is a full complement of technical staff in place to run coaching, do transfer deals etc? Given Brian's insistence of playing McCleary at right back, and a diamond formation that clearly didn't work, I reckon a lot of us might have a fighting chance. One draw in 8 and all that

No, quite obviously absolutely no chance. Regardless of whether they were capable of making the necessary judgements to a reasonable degree, they would have absolute zero credibility with the fans, the players, the owners and the coaches.

You've only got to take a look at the tactic boards and briefings players get before they go on, or listen to a decent pro talk about defensive set piece set up to know football is far more complicated than picking an XI and sending them out on the pitch. Managers do far more than picking the team and to have someone in the job with no experience means you're a coach short.

Lower West

Formations don't win matches. Performances do. Brian said as much prior to the Blackburn game and said that was a difficult summer ahead to achieve consistency. A month has now passed and the problems still exist. Half a dozen pre-season friendlies to find a blend. Long season ahead I would say.

Really?

Then let's play eight right wingers and two centre-forwards and the keeper can come out play back-and-hand

Avram Grant slashed from 10/1 to 11/4 in the last hour.

Interesting on Grant, especially as he's been seen at the ground on several occasions during the season. I'd rather Grant than some of the other names being bandied around

What are the new manager odds, on whoever we appoint, being a better manager and getting better results in his first 6 games than the last 6 games under MCD?

Think you're going to be in for a bit of a nasty surprise champ.

Based on the managers we've been linked to. No matter how anti McDermott you were, surely alarm bells are now ringing? Unless the owners surprise us, we're fcuked.

No alarm bells yet. I think they'll interview quite a few candidates over the coming weeks - I don't believe everything that's bleated the press.

Ftr I was not anti McDermott. But I'm not writing off next season just because he has been moved on

I would be very surprised if our next manager does not do better in his first six matches than McDermott did in his last six. It's called regression to the mean. Our last six matches were the second worst outcome possible, and were less than the team is capable of, so the chances are that our next six will be better than that. Nothing to do with the manager.

As things stand, I would be surprised if we do better this season than last season, but stranger things have happened. I certainly think our chances of improving on next season have been slashed (unlikely to find a better manager than McDermott, unlikely many good managers will be prepared to work here, huge unrest at the club), but they're still greater than zero.

On doing better than McDermott's last six games? Very favourable. On being a better manager or doing better than McDermott would have done? Not particularly favourable.

Personally I think we should be setting our sights a little higher than 0.2 points a game, but at least you won't be disappointed whatever happens.
