Matchwatch : Blackburn Rovers (h) sponsored by seven games to go

by Sutekh » 02 Apr 2017 16:32

Next into town is Blackburn Rovers. A team battling for points at the wrong end of the table and one that seems almost impossible for anyone to beat since Tony Mowbray took control a month two ago.

Not that the problem facing Reading will be much different from that Leeds posed. Another awkward northern side who are capable of presenting very dodgy moments and whom Reading will need to match toe to toe all the way through.

Logically expecting the typical well organised and proverbial bus to be parked firmly in front of their goal with emphasis on pacey breakaways - most probably from Reading's corners - being the order of the day from Hope and Danny's team. Note also that Rovers have only failed to score in one game in 2017 and that was on Saturday when they went down to a late goal on the south coast. On top of that, Saturday was their first defeat since Mowbray took over (a previous record of W2 D5 from 7 games)

Blackburn look to be without Corry Evans, Danny Graham and Adam Henley though injury while Reading will have a fitness test on Danny Williams. Joey van den Berg may be fit after being rested following a hamstring worry and Paul McShane really can't be too far away either. Jordan Obita should also make it after cramp in his calf caused hime to be substituted v Leeds

Referee

Nottinghamshire's James Adcock is has been assigned this one. Oddly it's his first game in charge since January when he refereed Reading's game with Cardiff

28 Jan 2017 > Reading 2-1 Cardiff City
13 Feb 2016 > Reading 0-0 Burnley
28 Sep 2014 > Reading 3-3 Wolverhampton Wanderers
22 Apr 2014 > Reading 2-0 Middlesbrough
28 Sep 2013 > Reading 2-0 Birmingham City

Historically

Eight previous league games in Reading against Blackburn and from that a whopping 2 wins! Although poor that does at least match the number of wins Blackburn have had in Reading so looks like a draw would not be a surprise to anyone at all (and of the 4 draws so far 3 of them have been devoid of any goals whatsoever).

We should really win this game buy it doesn't always work out like that. A draw wouldn't be the end of the world either.

Hopefully Williams will be fit for the game

tough one this. They have been playing well without picking up many wins.

I hope we are as focussed as we were on Saturday, in which case we should have enough to win the game. Two long trips from the depressing cold wet dismal grim miserable north for them in 4 days as well, which won't help their cause.

Our 3 rivals all have tough away games tonight - Sheff Weds because of the local rivalry. I'd be very surprised if they all win. A win tonight would be massive for us.

Going for a 2-0 win, goals from big Yann and McCleary

Going to go with a nervy 2-1 win with the usual 10 mins of defending for our lives, something we have become accustomed to this season not good for my heart!

Need to win tonight and continue pushing on, anything less would make the Leeds victory almost meaningless.

Can see this Blackburn side being very stubborn tonight.

I think Blackburn will sit deep tonight. It may be another game for Swift and Kelly. We will need that killer ball to open them up this evening. We won't get the one on one's that McLeary and Beerens had on Saturday. We will have to penetrate deeper this time.

Will be a tricky match but I'm going for 2-1 to the royals, Kermie and Williams.

IF we play like we did against Leeds we should get the win. Think confidence is growing and there is no reason we shouldn't be up for this. Hopefully their loss at Brighton has knocked the stuffing out of them somewhat.

Gonna stick with my original prediction and go for another 3 points.

2-1

Recent draws away to Norwich, Fulham and a narrow loss to Brighton. No easy games in this league, it'll certainly be tougher than we expect.

Win tonight would be great but disagree not winning would take any meaning away from the Leeds win. If we lose, then yes but a draw would be fine in the scheme of things.

A win though will see us all but over the line for a play off place esp if Fulham or Weds drop points.

"Law of averages" suggests we won't win our three winnable final home games.
This could be the one that doesn't go to plan.
Added to which, we turn to jelly when we're "looking to extend our excellent run of home form".
1-1. McCleary.

I'll be honest, while I was hyped for the Leeds match I am a bit nervous about tonight. I think we'll edge it by a goal, but it'll be very end to end and tense.

3-2 thriller, McCleary to end his drought of 17 games without a goal

Jaakkola, Mendes, McCleary, Ilori, Williams, Watson, Grabban

Great to see Ilori back. Assuming Williams and McCleary are rested.

Assume Meite and Rakels aren't fit given Mendes has made the bench. Be good to 'see' Popa get a full game, as well as Oxford. Hopefully Mutch can show what he's got. It's a bit patchwork.

Happy enough with the team. Would have given Popa a start so pleased he is in.

Any ideas where Evans has got to? Obviously our super reporter J.Low hasn't even mentioned his name recently. I can't believe he has been dropped altogether
