Went to watch Warrington v Radcliffe in the Northern Premier League this afternoon where Jem Karacan was playing for Radcliffe. Had wondered why he was playing at this level. I now know, the game completely passed him by, quite disappointed really even though I have a Warrington season ticket and we won I would have liked to see him put in a performance.

Rumour that Michael Hector is apparently training with Reading.

Confirmed by the manager today. Hope we don't sign the tosser.

Why's he a tosser?

To be fair it must be very hard for him to adapt to playing rugby league.

David Armstrong (ex M’boro and Soton) who joined Reading as coach in the late 80s and early 90s and, I think, at one point as a commercial manager for the club at some point sadly died in August this year.

Always thought he was a terrific player. RIP.

Great awareness on the free kick for their first as well as the hat trick. Also 2 great assists for their keeper! Thanks for sharing..

Think he was. Community manager rather than Commercial. He had an office tucked away in E Stand at EP where I once had a meeting with him. Lovely bloke.

Good move, shows what is possible sometime as a free agent - still been playing internationally whilst without a club which will have helped him get a deal.

A week late I know but Charlie Hurley was 86 last Tuesday. Be wonderful if it was possible to get an interview with him and his time managing the club, after all he got the club it’s first promotion in 50 years and was the only league manager who could get some sort of control on Robin Friday. Incidentally, excluding any caretakers, there’s just 7 people left now who managed the club in the 20th century, and only 2 who managed the club prior to John Madejski’s take over.

I honestly thought Charlie Hurley died about 10 years ago.

I'm probably thinking of the other ex manager and Sunderland cult hero Ian Porterfield

Does Eddie Niedewecki count in all the categories ?

Agree, I believe he's still in the area, I think he left football completely after managing us.

1975/76 season will always be special for those of us around then as it was the first promotion for generations. I missed the Friday goal as was a midweek game, but remember the Lincoln game soon after, 16k fans which was unheard of back then in 4th tier.

Little bit more digging reveals a biography is available by Mark Metcalf. It was published a while ago and covers Charlie’s career with Millwall, Sunderland and RoI and I think his time as Reading boss. It’s called “The Greatest Centre Half the World has ever seen”. The 10 number ISBN is 1899807691.
