From Despair To Where? Chris Martin was suffering from ulcerative colitis whilst he was on loan to us.

In fairness to him, that would go a long way towards explaining his poor form.

Was Chris Martin was suffering from intestinal problems when he was transferred to us?

Was that not taken into account at the medical? Did Derby know?

He’s now opened up about it being a problem at Derby, Hull and Reading...

As I saw someone say on Twitter, it can go undiagnosed for years, so it is a possibility.

It can be latent, but there must have been problems - if they appeared at Reading , then why were they not taken into consideration for the Hull move?

Martin may have been covering this from DCFC, RFC and HCFC

He may not have been "covering" it, medical professionals can be quite dismissive of the symptoms of intestinal problems, they generally have to get very bad before they're taken seriously. So if he's used to "playing through" pain, and dealing with it that way, he might not have been fully aware of how vitamin/mineral deficiencies caused by the problems were also affecting him

So it may be a retrospective thing - he's now got a diagnosis for something serious, which he now recognises as a cause of him never being fully fit etc.

It manifests in many ways and not necessarily consistently. In my case it was very quickly diagnosed once I actually saw a doctor about it. But it took me a good six to 12 months to go because I'm a oxf*rd idiot.

It really depends on how extensive it was, how severe it was and how constant it was.

You can be a sufferer who goes years with no problems at all, or be so seriously and constantly affected you need surgery to remove some or all of your colon.

One way it affects you is that any time you get even slightly ill it can flare up because it's an auto immune disease. So when the immune system kicks in, it gets worse. I always get stomach cramps and... err... a bit loose.... when I get a sniffle, for example, despite being pretty much ok the rest of the time.

The treatments can also cause problems. And they don't necessarily manifest as soon as you start taking them. Mine showed up about 18 months after I started.

Assuming he was diagnosed before he joined us, and I expect a club would ensure a flatulent player needing 5+ shits a day and little control to hold them in would get checked out quickly, he could have been managing it fine most of the time. His time here could have just coincided with a flare up.

Completely agree, I have exactly the same issue as Martin and it comes and goes in flare-ups. He may also not have known he had it until he got to Reading, it requires a camera inside you to diagnose which wouldn't be covered in a medical. Also, it may have had it for a while before Reading and then had a particularly big flare up caused by stress or other circumstances. I do find it strange it wasn't mentioned at the time as its nothing to be ashamed of and could have prevented a lot of angst between fans and Martin, yet he may have wanted to get it secret, who knows.

Flare ups for me and I believe most people that have it tend to last 1-3 months and then will calm down for a long time, for example my last one was 2 years ago. I can't speak for Martin as we have completely different bodies, but he could quite easily have been completely fine at Hull and at Derby now, with his last flare up occuring at Reading.

Yep this.

Mental health can have an affect as well. Change of scenery and circumstances can help.

Should Derby be loaning out a player they know to be "compromised"?

He admits it's been an issue for the last two years.

Martin's getting excuses in early for the next club he plays for?

Would you care to explain what you mean by that so I don't have to infer anything offensive or insulting.

Either Derby knew or Martin was not open with Derby.

If derby come down hard on the party group, Martin will be looking for a new club that may question his form over the last two years.

I have no issue with his disease (I am literally working in developing treatments for UC/Crohn's tomorrow) so am aware of remissions and flare ups.

There's no reason to question whether Derby hid it or Martin hid it from Derby.

There's no solid reason for it being a bar to him playing or transfering clubs depending on how it is affecting him. Which can and does change.
