Made more interceptions and more tackles than any other Reading player last season and blocked more crosses than any other defender in the league.

For someone who can't cross he has two assists already this season and was one of our top assist makers last season as well.

Ok, I take back that he can't defend, it's just he's never there to do the defending this season, because Gomes doesn't seem to want him in our half.

PS you can get an assist without crossing. Cuts inside and runs into the box way too much. Being one of Reading's top assisters last season isn't a huge achievement.

Yiadom is too cavalier to play under Gomes right now, because Gomes doesn't have a oxf*rd clue how to organise and manage defending, and Yiadom's natural inclination to maraud up the wing needs to be restrained a bit, not actively encouraged.

Yup. His two assists were touches in our own half for the Swift and Puscas breakaway goals against Cardiff.

He rarely crosses the ball and on the odd occasion he does it's after 2 or 3 added touches and just gets blocked, negating the movement Puscas makes in the box. He's a decent player and I really like his energy but he's often every bit a liability defensively as Gunter was and he got absolute pelters for it.

The one thing you could rely on with Gunter was to broadly be in position. He might not do enough when there, backing off etc, but he was there.

Yiadom is far better going forward, more positive in possession and stronger. But that doesn't help if you're 20 yards up the pitch. And he needs to whip some early crosses in from deep sometimes, plus hit the byline occasionally to cross.

Gang. I've had an epiphany. You know how our strikers would thrive on crosses but we have no wingers?

.....................Cabral
Howe, Miazga, Morrison, Richards
Yiadom, Rinomhota, Pele, Obita
................Meite, Puscas

Yiadom basically plays as a winger already, but is better defensively than one. Obita grew up as a winger and is decent defensively. Richards deserves to play.

Set up hard to beat, go wide and go direct. Rough up the defence. Bring Swift / Ejaria etc on to open up if need be.

Don't need it really. Their job is to win the ball and quickly get it forward or out wide. Thats not dissimilar to how we set up under Clement at times. I think it'd work reasonably well, but Gomes wouldn't go down that route

Karacan could be creative. I highly doubt you would have seen him play tbh.

You ‐--------------------------------------> the point

The creativity is on the flanks. Plus Rino can break. We need to stop conceding and losing. Once we get some solid performances, clean sheets and unbeaten streaks, we can open up a bit more a step at a time.

And plenty of room to stay 0-0 for 65 minutes and then throw on some flair for a bit of Alfie time.

We've lost most our games by HT.

Same here if you think he was much more creative than Rino.

I don't suggest they just sit there and block hoofing balls upfield over their shoulder like Jem did a lot of the time.

Basically i’d Play 3-5-2 when attacking and 5-3-2 when defending.

As has been suggested already, who you need to play is Rinomhota and Pele rather than Ejaria and Swift.

Therefore I would be selecting (when all fit)

Rafael
Yiadom Miazga Morrison Moore Richards
Pele Rinomhota
Ejaria
Puscas Meite

Subs

Walker
Swift
Joao
Barrett
Boye
McIntyre
Obita

The 1st thing Gomes needs to do is restore Miazga to the starting line-up and the 2nd thing he needs to do is never start a game with Barrett again.

Says ‘when all fit’. Assume that means ‘not suspended’ as well

Barrett is very definitely not the problem, despite not a great game.

If Barrett shouldn't start again, Moore should never play again, anywhere.

They had Kebe and McAnuff on the wings. Ian's team has two full backs on the wings.

You could have just said "Kebe" and that would have put your point across.

Ok. I'm bored at work. I cant watch this game as I have work but how about:

---------------Rafael
Miazga---Morrison---Moore*
Yiadom---------------------Richards
-----------Pele---Rinomhota
----------------Ejaria
----------Meite---Puscas

Walker
Obita
McIntyre
Olise
Barrett
Joao
Loader

Might work. Obviously not my preferred formation but it's as good as I can think of.

Rinomhota was fine against Fulham. Loved his spirit, charging runs and his willingness to intercept and counter.

Also thought Puscas played well enough all things considered.

Meite has to start. Reward the goal. Cant keep chopping and changing the forwards.

*getting towards his last chance for me.

Don’t think you’re far off tbh. Although expect Obita instead of Richards and possibly Joao in for Meite. Probably see Adam on the bench somewhere too
