Snowflake Royal Wigan could be a tough nut to crack. Our form is not great and whilst theirs isn't exactly stonking, they've only lost once in the last six and in their last 2 away picked up a good win against Leeds and a draw against Cardiff.

We need to be on our game and our home record isn't great. Plus Wigan seem to regularly survive thanks to points from us, often at our expense, though we're pretty safe this time round.

I think we'll have enough but it could be tight and scrappy.

Yep, they’ve been on reasonable form this year and beat the mighty Leeds away

23% possession . Two shots on target.

Vs Millwall. Again only 2 shots on target. Own goal won the points.

Odds on for a goalless draw Wednesday night........

Ascotexgunner If he starts Puscas alone up Ill scream......Baldock needs to start, I don't know what he has done to deserve this treatment off of Bowen but persevering with a player whose work rate/creativity and threat is nowhere near the bloke whose sitting on the bench is utter lunacy.

Maybe only scoring 4 goals this season might be a clue, and one of them was a pen.

Old Man Andrews  Puscas instead of Baldock.......

I’d start him on the basis that a couple of games ago, he did well, and it’s no use to him (or Baldock) constantly chopping and changing. Choose one, give them a bit of a run to see if they can deliver in a fast turnover period. In addition, Puscas scored a hat trick against this lot last time

However, I wouldn’t be against a two up top formation to work on a strike duo for Sheffield United. I’m not sure playing a lone striker against three tall centre halves will work (in particular Baldock/Puscas) so perhaps planning and adapting for that game can be beneficial

You sure about that? EDIT: Mixed up this one with the Cardiff brace. Ignore me.

Upfront it's the same old conundrum isn't it ... no one fit to play upfront on their own, but who do you drop in midfield to accommodate a second striker? Or do you drop the wide players - in which case you've really got to push the wing backs up to have width which means you need a third CB or two DMs to avoid being wide open.

It's quite a specialised formation so may not necessarily work, but a 4-4-2 diamond with this group of players may work, with Pele holding, Rino and Swift ahead with Ejaria at the tip of the diamond

Width could then come from Yiadom and Richards bombing on, with Pele and Rino able to cover the gaps left from them or the front two could drift out wide, if, let's say it's Meite and Baldock who have experience of that

You don't see many teams play this formation to be fair as you do need certain types of players but it's something that perhaps could, with this set of players. IIRC McDermott experimented with this formation for a bit in his second spell

I mean, it's only 2 games ago we were saying that Puscas had put in his best game as a lone striker. Are we going to give up after a game against the best defence in the league when he was feeding off scraps? If you look back to Sheff Weds, the key is Meite and Ejaria/Olise coming inside and supporting him when we attack.

Don't think we've got the right strikers for it without Joao. But yeah, with Pele, Rino and Swift it's possible, though Swift is poor pushed wider

Totally agree.

The fact that Wigan are getting 1.67 points per game away
is utterly irrelevant.

The fact that our home form is very poor is also irrelevant

I can't decide between RFC winning 4-0 or winning 5-0

Average position of the teams played in the last 6 games has got to factor into this, surely?

Wigan have beaten Leeds, Weds & Millwall. Drawn with Boro & Cardiff Lost to Preston

We have beaten Weds, drew with Hull & Cardiff lost to Leeds, WBA and Bristol

So, 3 similar opponents (Wigan 7 pts, us 4) of the other 3 our opponents higher placed.

Basically without wading through the stats, Wigan will be fancying this one.

They'll be desperate for the 3 points that could put them out of the relegation zone - going to be anything but easy

Agreed, but "Basically without wading through the stats, Wigan will be fancying this one." mens/comes from
being aware of their recent form, particularly away, surely?

I mean if they were 20 points from safety having just lost their last sixth away game on the trot
I doubt you'd be saying, "Basically without wading through the stats, Wigan will be fancying this one.

Yep, most of us would undoubtedly be aware they had won a few recently without reading posts on stats. Likewise most would be aware we'd only won 1 recently without seeing the form guide written down

This is why, then, we are getting predictions of 4-0, 3-1 etc.

I knew their form had perked up a bit, but not for a second did I think
they would be top half in the form table, never mind sixth place!

OTOH whoscored say this...

Wigan have failed to win 35 of their last 38 away matches (Championship).

This season they are 2-5-10 away, but the two away wins are recent.

Leeds must've been expecting a 5-0 cruise

Assuming Wigan have a dogged, backs to the wall mentality, I think this is a good game for Adam. This or Barnsley. Creativity, a genuine set piece threat, and as we're unlikely to be chasing the game in midfield, his mobility isn't such an issue. Wigan and Barnsley will effectively be looking to do against us what we did to Preston and Fulham.

Tend to agree with this, thought he would've been perfect for Hull at home as well.

Just because you have some sort of irrational hate of Baldock:

George Puscas - 9 goals, 0 assists, 1919 minutes played, 213 mins per goal (2 penalties btw)

Sam Baldock - 5 goals, 0 assists, 894 minutes played, 179 mins per goal (1 penalty)

If you choose to exclude Baldock’s goal from the cup, both him and Puscas are on very similar stats with minutes per goal. When you consider Puscas was supposed to be “the next best thing” and Baldock was “worn out and useless” (according to some), I’d suggest Baldock has outperformed Puscas this season, certainly in terms of expectations anyway
