‪Great idea, but what about those who work in care homes as nurses and careers?

I’m sure they’ve will have done more hands on work than the appointments clerks at outpatients.

COVID-19 is going to go through care homes like a tsunami.‬

Nothing for them...

Don't care homes come under NHS purview? Also it says that the details haven't been confirmed yet, so no need to get overly cynical, just yet

Nope, they are mainly private providers with resident care funded by DHSC. The same goes for hospices. It’s unlikely that residents will be given a ‘good’ bed in an overworked NHS unit and will therefore be allowed a “natural death”.

Mrs Uke is a sister in a nursing care home 50 residents a third with dementia, and is shitting bricks about what is coming. These are long term patients so she knows them, their families etc.

It’s also staffed by more of those “unskilled” types who suddenly people seem to realise have actually kept our worlds going...

Absolutely agree with this. Always they bang on about NHS staff (and quite rightly so) but the carers who work in private nursing home and those that go to people’s homes on a daily basis supporting the elderly and a great many “at risk” patients really do need to be called out more as the absolute angels they mostly are - esp. as they get paid a pittance to do jobs which are actually a damn sight more important than a great many other jobs anywhere. Just imagine what they have to do every day in terms of not only the care provided but the extra bits added on top now to try and maintain as much protection for their “patients” as well as themselves and their families.

He will confess after two weeks that he hadn’t realised the importance of hand washing.

Why is he stupid ? looking at his career so far on Wikipedia he seems to be a fairly intelligent chap, given what he has achieved so far at a relatively young age.
How are your achievements at a similar age ?

Raab is best known for taking extreme and arguably ridiculous positions on Brexit. As I alluded to, he was specifically criticised for saying he hadn’t understood our reliance on the Dover-Calais shipping line.

He was later the first leadership candidate to suggest a lengthy prorogation of Parliament in order to stop scrutiny of Brexit - this probably helped undermine Johnson when he tried to claim he was doing it for routine reasons and was found to have acted illegally.

At the best of times, government ministers are often great examples of the Peter Principle. The skills that make you a good lawyer or business leader are not the same skills that help you win an election. The skills that help you win an election are not the same skills that make you a decent MP, and there’s slightly more to becoming a minister than being a good MP. We often end up with senior ministers who are woefully out of their depth - consider Labour’s Home Secretaries under Blair and Brown. This current government has it even worse because of their insistence upon total lock-step agreement with their fantastical ideology that few people suited to ministerial office actually hold.

Royal Rother And then you look across the floor and see Diane Abbott.

Surprises me that Abbott is the one picked out as “stupid” given that she’s by far the most intelligent figure on the British left.

Quick comparison:
Jeremy Corbyn was given every advantage in life and dropped out of his degree in Trade Union studies at North London Polytechnic.

Diane Abbott came from a working class immigrant background but got into grammar school, and then into Cambridge University, where she graduated with a 2:2 in History.

Obviously education is not everything, but the evidence of Abbott’s alleged stupidity seems to be that she once said “thousand” when she meant “million”, while the likes of Corbyn, McDonnell, and Long-Bailey can make gaffe after gaffe without getting the same thrown at them.

Do we need to put you in the same box as Kes and Strap?

Well said SCiAG. Abbott is worthy of pisstakes for her pisspoor performance in that “ numbers” interview, but there is no doubt a racist element to singling her out , supposedly as thick. ( no, not you RR).

RR do you read the Economist? It’s a right-wing rag, but a trusted, well- connected, well-written and researched one. Anyway in this week’s Bagehot column, check it out, it says the current cabinet is the weakest in post- war history, and cites ( no, not junior minister Dorries, who is a fking star ) Patel and Raab as being particularly poor ( Raab being the PM’s stand-in if he gets ill is described as “ particularly worrying”. In the event, the PM is ill and it seems to be Michael Gove standing in. Fking hell).
It also says Williamson and Truss are “ over- promoted”. A euphemism, you’ll agree.

It advocates the PM sacking them all ( ok, it doesn’t say that, it says replace the current “government with a One Nation Tory government”. Or a government of national unity with Keir Starmer as deputy PM.

Things are that bad.

Look I h8ed Thatcher, but everybody could see she was competent and doing what she thought was best for the country, not for her career.

I don’t read The Economist.

Politics is weak across the board.

It’s not just the “numbers” interview, it’s every interview. She comes across as bumbling, underprepared, lacking knowledge or the ability to deal with even fairly innocuous challenges....

Of course she’s not thick, just incompetent, which can be said about most of them on both sides of the house.

Call out a black person as being incompetent and the racist card gets (gently) played. It’s pathetic tbh.

She gets massive racist abuse and has reported it to the police. Ditto Meghan Markle.

Of course a Corbin/ Abbott government would be as useless as any government in the current virus onslaught.

I was citing the Economist as “ respected” and certainly not socialist/ left wing. And they’ve called it, in damning fashion

16th March - - - - 01,543 Cases - - - 0,055 Deaths = 3.56% of Confirmed Cases

28th March - - - - 17,089 Cases - - - 1,019 Deaths = 5.96% of Confirmed Cases

11.1-fold increase in 12 Days - Cases
18.5-fold increase in 12 Days - Deaths

It's clear that the percentage of confirmed cases resulting in deaths is on track to reach the Italian/Spanish levels (10.56% and 7.88% ATM

The WORLD rate is, ATM 15.36%. That figure (Confirmed Cases Only) is the result of dividing Deaths by Case Resolutions.

Case Resolutions is Number of Deaths plus Number of Patients Recovered.

If Un-counted Cases are 10:1 then true World Rate is 1.54%
If Un-counted Cases are 20:1 then true World Rate is 0.77%
If Un-counted Cases are 40:1 then true World Rate is 0.38%
If Un-counted Cases are 50:1 then true World Rate is 0.31%

Seasonal Flu has a death rate of 0.1%

Just briefly re Lux’s post on Abbott as it is moving off topic. She has been vilified in the media and there is a racist element to this. It’s disgusting the way she has been portrayed. However she does come across as deeply patronising and frankly she was hypocritical in regard to the private education of her children. That does not though excuse the way she has been treated which is shameful
