Another sad day. I remember seeing Ray Hiron in many of the RFC home games. He was often the 'out' ball for mad Robin.

Surpised he 'only' played 114 games in the Hoops and notched 14 goals. My senility suggests that he scored more than that.

RIP Ray.

Yep, another one here DHH, to me he always seemed like he had the grace (and height) of a giraffe, heart of a lion and still remember him reeling away from the Tilehurst end after scoring....beaming smile on his face. My Portsmouth supporting work colleague will be upset to hear this too, we’ve often chewed the cud about him and our other Pompey acquisitions.

RIP Ray

Much maligned by the boo-boys, even during the 75/76 promotions season, but his selfless performances helped Robin Friday and John Murray shine. His goals against Doncaster and especially against Brentford at home were vital (below). His best game? Home to Tranmere.

RIP Stick.

Wow, great photos. I can see Bruce Stuckey and Gary Peters I reckon.

RIP Ray, a hero of mine.

Ha, just said to myself: "There's Bruce Stuckey and Tommy Youlden...." but I think you're right, Lux, it may be Gary Peters.

Scored a vital goal at the end of the season V Lincoln (champions that season - start of Graham Taylor's success)

I'm sure its one of the few clips of us back then that's on U Tube

Never realised he was captain that season

I have fond recollections of his couple of seasons with us. As has been muted he was the “quiet man no. 10”. Just got on with his job, seemed to enjoy his stint with us, always put in a decent shift and despite a previous comment I think he was a popular choice on the team sheet. Above all he seemed a decent bloke.

RIP Ray.

I was at Fratton Park early in the 76/77 season when Ray, now playing for us, hobbled off injured, to a massive ovation and chanting of his name from the Portsmouth Faithful.

Hidden away somewhere i have his testimonial programme for when he was at Portsmouth, nicknamed Charlie after the anatomical skeleton in the Pompey Doctors cupboard. He went through a real goal drought in the 75/76 promotion season but came good again, as you guys said a good foil for Friday

I was at that game. Ray had been out with injury and should never have started but he was keen to play. As you say, he got a massive ovation from the Pompey faithful but hobbled off after less than one minute. You were only allowed one sub in those days, which was significant later when Gary Peters was crocked by a dreadful "challenge" from our former player Mick Mellows and hobbled on for the rest of the game on the wing.
A heroic effort from Gary, which culminated in him getting the second goal in a 2-0 win

Thanx for that Brox

I will take great delight in reminding my Pompey supporting work colleague (and ex 657 crew member) of that fact

It was the days before hooligan gangs adorned themselves with names, you were just your 'Clubs Name Boot Boys'. Reading didn't really have much of a mob, and most grounds hadn't worked out the segregation game, so i spent that afternoon keeping a very low profile and kept my yellow (away) silk scarf well hidden.

I also remember a game against Aldershot (a cup tie, I think?) when we had none of our regular centre backs available. Ray played that game in central defence, alongside a young forward who had not yet broken into the team, namely Mark White.
The veteran and the youngster, both playing out of position, were superb. We kept a clean sheet and won the game.
I think the regular centre backs were available the very next game so that combination didn't happen again. Ray Hiron went back up front and Mark White was moved to left back, where he was very good indeed.
