Yeah, first day of the season, we had Senior, Maskell and Moran upfront for the first time together, I think they all scored, Exeter were Div 4 champs and hadn't been beaten for ages at home.

Lovely sunny day, great pub and fish and chips in Sidmouth on the way home. Rest of season downhill all the way from there ...........vvvvvvv

Drove down to Exeter. We played really well, but that was as good as it got that season.

Thinking of away games at Exeter I remember a dreadful Evening game there in 1993 when we drew 0-0 having rushed down there with daughter, son and son's girlfriend after work.

The following season made up for it though with a really exciting 6-4 where at one stage it looked as though Exeter might get back in the game after we raced into a clear lead.
My daughter came to the game despite being 7 months pregnant and having been told to take things easy and not get over-excited!!
The Ladies (&Gents) toilets hardly existed.

One other game there in another bad season 1982 (was it really that long ago?) saw us draw 2-2 in a game we should have won and the wonderful Kerry Dixon scored twice.
In a massive crowd of little over 2000 on a Saturday a couple of weeks before Christmas my son and I stood on what we discovered was the home terracing.
In what seemed to me a not very hostile crowd I was happy to cheer our 2 goals even though my son was a bit wary.

On paper it didn't look that long a journey but from Bournemouth it still took around 2 hours however I don't think I ever saw us lose there.

That’s 6-4 game May, and I’m ready to stand corrected, be the only game in the history of the league in which 5 players scored 2 goals and none got a hat trick.
Why don’t we have a chant for that ?

Still one of the worst away ends in english football....but, on a positive, it's only a short drive home.

I remember coming away from St James Park after that opening day 3-1 win in 1990 thinking we were going to win the league. We had three £250,000 strikers all scoring and it looked like it was going to be our year.
Finished 15th as I recall......

Who was the driver? One of your mob or a hired chauffeur?

Any antics en-route?

Is there much of a Royals ex-pat community in the English riviera?

My memory of away to Exeter was a pre-season friendly in either 89 or 90? The weather was good so me and two mates thought we’d go down for a crack.

We met in our local before mid day and discovered the game was being played behind closed doors at the Uni or somewhere. We thought sod it we’ll go anyway and chance our arm only to be told by the Landlord when we were leaving not only was it being played behind closed doors but it was also a mid day kick off!

We went anyway and had a belting night out in Exeter spoilt only by me getting pulled by the filth for speeding at Membury on the way back the next morning!

No idea to this day what the score was.

We had a driver supplied by the mini bus firm. There was a few antics on the way down, we got pulled over and had our beer tipped down the drain by the wiltshire constabulary (typical) only half the chaps made it back to Reading though!

It's growing....

One in Paignton, one in Exeter and yesterday a Reading jacket spotted in the Torquay branch of the Range.....

Giddy times.

See what success can bring. Imagine if Reading could finish in the to half of the second division, might then get to see a Reading shirt in the Totnes Co-Op and from there the sky’s the limit
