linkenholtroyal We have a lot to do in 4 weeks, sign 4 or 5 cheap players to squad fill, sell a couple of assets and get contracts to our young players in there last year. Clock is ticking.

Transfer window shuts early October so a lot of activity will be then. Frustrating as I preferred it when it shut before the season started, meant You didn’t start the season with a different team to a month later

Pretty unmanageable to have a normal transfer window what with what’s gone on this year.

Of course it has to be extended this year due to the circumstances. I preferred the old way years ago when the only cut off was mid-late March! Transfer windows we have nowadays inflate player prices & unnecessary long contracts are handed out to overrated players. Probably just described Reading FC’s approach there

Window is open until mid October isn’t it ?
New contracts aren’t a priority at this point so cross that off !
The crucial factor is getting clarification on our FFP position. Suspect that will mean the Ovie deal goes through and we’ll probably have a couple of others lined up and waiting.

But would be good to have the main body of the team in place by kick off at the beginning of the season with maybe 1/2 additions afterwards. If he wants to play 5-3-2 we are a couple of wing backs short, another cb, Ovie and a couple of wide players needed to change things up if needed. + replacing any that leave. It would be gd to have 4 of those 6 by then. And contracts are important.
Richards, McIntyre and Holsgroves contracts are up at the end of the season. They need to be tied down before we end up losing them just as they come good like Osho or missing out on a few like Loader. If we lose them for nothing the academy is pointless.

Am sure discussion on new deals are already ongoing or slated in for later this year. The club will know who they are likely to want to keep already. Holsgrove hasn't done anything at this level yet so doubt his contract will be a priority as things stand. If he settles in as a valuable squad member then imagine that would get sorted quickly enough.

Osho was a strange one. He was clearly not in the club's plans for a long time and his loans were all close to failures. He got a chance due to underperforming players and only due to the delayed season played well for 3 games then his level dropped and he was dropped too. Was right to offer him a deal late in the day and not before. If the season had finished as expected in May, he would have left in June and I doubt one person on this board would have done anything more than shrug their shoulders and wished him well at whatever L1 club he ended up at.

Contracts are obviously important but not, as you suggested, in the next 4 weeks. Plenty of time once the transfer dealings are done to get those sorted.
Crazy to say that if we lose a few players without a fee the Academy is ‘pointless’. We’ve had millions in fee income from Academy products and hundreds of first team appearances. Osho has not done anything to suggest he deserved a deal hav8ng not impressed on several loan spells, suddenly looking promising in a handful of games possibly sways opinion but he needed to be doing that months ago.
I’d agree in an ideal, world you’d get your new sign8ngs sorted quickly but realistically we can’t do that, and not sure many clubs have been hugely active yet have they ? You would hope we have deals lined up and ready to go subject to FFP situationbeing sorted.

I don’t think we’re a long way off having a competitive squad anyway tbh. We could happily lose McNulty and Smith and bring in a winger and we’re ok to start the season

Obvs we need some back up for the FBs but I’m sure there are loads of adequate players knocking about ooc

Wonder how we will set up at the start of the season seeing as Meite is suspended for the first three games.

Hopefully broadly the same as if he wasn't with one player different.

Seems a poor idea to change shape or style because one player is suspended.

Going to be interesting seeing how Meite fits in if we are moving to 3-5-2, given he's predominantly been played wide which won't really exist.

Given, I assume, one of those games will be the League Cup game on the 5th and and the 3rd could be a 2nd round game, he may only miss 1 important* game.

Well yes the 1 player who doesn’t really fit a 3-5-2 is Meite...and he’s been our most prolific goalscorer. His defensive game has really improved but he’s clearly not a wing back. He’s not an attacking midfielder...potentially could play slightly deeper than Joao and run onto flick ons.

But...it fits the rest of the “1st team”, ie that starting team on Saturday. We looked good, but yes more squad depth would be required if we persist with it

yeah agreed Meite is a tough one to fit in

Obviously been very good for us, and a crucial part of our make up. But he can only really play as that inside right forward

Lets flog him then. Some of our issues have been fitting square pegs into round holes. If 3-5-2 suits the majority of the squad, we should cash in and replace any player who doesn't slot in and find one that does.

I think he slots into the role Olise played on Saturday, essentially a bit of a free role but emphasis seems to be on drifting into wide positions and then supporting Joao. Think it would fit Meite fine.

Sell our best attacker? Sounds like a great plan.....

I think Joao and Meite would be fine.

Don’t agree at all. We struggle to score goals so why sell a young, improving and hard working player who scored 17 goals for us last season?
