MATCHWATCH : Wycombe Wanderers (h) sponsored by Keith Scott

by Sutekh » 17 Oct 2020 17:07

When : Tuesday 20th October 2020, 8pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

It's banana skin time for one of the joint league leaders. Wycombe Wanderers at home. Most fans would see this as a home banker but we know there's no such thing in football so everyone again has to be wary and give Wycombe the respect they deserve.

Wycombe haven't had a great start and already look like they may be doomed to very quickly return whence they came as the season hasn't been kind to the Chairboys so far with the club suffering 5 losses from 5 games. However the team has been carrying a number of injuries and a few suspensions already and Gareth Ainsworth’s boys have now scored a goal so things could be beginning to improve for them.

The squad at Wycombe has seen former Reading youth players Andre Burley and Uche Ikpeazu join during the transfer window as well as the experienced one time Reading target Daryl Horgan from Preston. In addition Josh Knight (Leicester) and Dennis Adeniran (Everton) have arrived on season long loans. In addition Adebayo Akinfenwa is very near a return after a knee injury so there is may well be one challenge there for the Reading defence.

On the Reading front Swift, Yiadom and Araruna remain sidelined and it is hoped that nothing untoward has been picked up at Middlesbrough, especially now that the games start hitting at a fast and furious pace with this being the 2nd game of 7 to be played in just 21 days before the next international break!

For the record, after scuppering Reading’s perfect start, Middlesbrough could do a big favour for the club on Tuesday by denting Bristol City’s challenge a bit further.

Referee

Historically

Here's a rarity, Reading have a 100% home record against Wycombe in the league, true it's only 4 games but it's still something to hope the club can hang onto. All previous games came at Division 3 level over the 4 successive seasons between 1998 and 2001 and in each game Reading scored twice while Wycombe have managed only 2 goals across all 4 games. The last couple of games played have also seen clean sheets for Reading.

How to follow the game

  1. Red button should be back for this one (starts 19:55hrs)
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use an iFollow subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Wycombe should probably be relegated for letting Akinfenwa into the Championship.

So a real local derby played under the lights against Wycombe Wanderers whom may not be one of our fiercest rivals, however geographically i think the are second only to Aldershot and we share the top of the league on points with Brizzle. It doesn't get much better than this we ask, however Covid has spoiled this one for us and has ruined what would have been a great atmosphere i'm sure.

They are the most dire and piss poor side to have ever been in the division. I like them but they are really punching above their weight. Shame because they are plucky little Wycombe with a good manager.

Wonder who oma wants to win, Reading or his man crush Ainsworth?

Should win this comfortably. But hope the squad don't approach it that way. They'll still need to show up and work hard to get the result.

Looked a little lacklustre today. Some poor decision making, a few occasions players took on too much, or passed sideways or backwards when there was an option to play or run forward. Didn't have much luck trying to get in behind or cross in. But boro are no schmucks and know how to defend. Think we'll see our players beating Wycombe players more often.

Thought Holmes did alright, but still isn't really a RB so I'd bring Esteves in

Wycombe have done fantastically well to achieve what they have, they really do look like they have a struggle on their hands and no way on earth should this be anything other than a Reading win

But that’s not how football works, however,. If we are serious about even a top half finish we should be putting games like this to bed.

The sort of game as a Reading fan (especially of late) I really fear. Come on lads get a win

Holmes was good and has done an amazing job as stand in over the past few games, however he isn't a natural right back which shows in his attack play. The games against Wycombe and Rotherham should be ideal for Esteves to get to grips with the English game and i'm sure his european flair on the ball will be a huge asset to the team moving forward.
Back to Holmes, this guy and McIntyre are the future of the club and will be the new Moore and Morrison in the near future, both are very good ball players and strong in the air and the future looks bright.

No easy games in this division. We had to huff and puff to get past Barnsley a couple of weeks back.

I know we have a busy schedule over the next 3 weeks but I do hope Pauno doesn’t rotate the squad too much for this one.

That's nice for them.

Moore cleared a certain goal off the line and blocked another likely goal, think he did more to stifle Boro's attack too. That takes the gong for me.

To be fair nobody stood out as it was an all round solid display. I thought Rino was superb, his energy levels and screening of the defence was fantastic. Laurent did ok too. Saville and Howson are experienced champ CM’s and they didn’t cause us any problems at all really. Holmes, Richards, Morro, Moore all brilliant too.

Wycombe are out of their depth and are here via a free ticket into the playoffs because of covid, games in hand are never points in the bag particularly when playing catch up late in the season.

I can see the next 2 games being very similar - two very direct ex league one sides - and we will have to prepare properly. If we do its 6 points.

We've conceded 1 and scored 7.
They've scored 1 and conceded 12.

On paper it should be about as solid a 2/3-0 to us as you can get.

1-0 Wycombe then
