MATCHWATCH : Preston North End (h) sponsored by David Leworthy

by Sutekh » 30 Oct 2020 22:34

When : Wednesday, 4th November 2020, 7pm
Where : Madejski Stadium, Reading, RG2 0FL
Capacity : 24,161

Well now the “run” is over we can all start wondering if Reading actually are the real deal or just got away with it for a month or two. And the first test of that does not come much harder than a visit from Preston North End.

Preston haven’t had too much of a good time at home but away they are the best you can get in this division with 4 wins (at QPR, Derby, Brentford & Huddersfield) and 1 draw (at Norwich) from the 5 games away games they’ve played in the league. In each of those games they’ve scored at least twice bar one when they scored 4 so if Reading serve up a reappearance of the cr@p that was in show at Coventry they may as well not bother turning up.

It gets worse, regular Reading pain in the arse Scott Sinclair joined the Lilywhites in January and is currently leading Preston’s scoring charts with 4 goals from 8 games so let’s hope he doesn’t get given an inch of space.

Preston’s Lewis Moult will miss the game while Darnell Fisher, Patrick Bauer, Ben Fisher and Ben Davies are currently slight doubts. Reading’s catalogue of injuries should be improved with the return of both Ejaria and Meite which will give some welcome relief to a squad already down to the bare bones. That said not sure on Moore after he seemed to get a knock v Coventry...

Also note the kick off time, as it’s 7pm I believe it will NOT be on the Sky red button service.

Referee

John “no Reading wins” Brooks

Previously

04 Jan 20 > Reading 2-2 Blackpool (FA Cup 3)
27 Apr 19 > Middlesbrough 2-1 Reading
09 Feb 19 > Sheffield Wednesday 0-0 Reading
26 Jan 18 > Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 Reading (FA Cup 4)
23 Dec 17 > Reading 1-2 Burton Albion

Historically

This will be the 30th league game with Preston in Reading. Reading has been a bit of a graveyard for visiting Preston teams down the years (pretty much like Deepdale is for visiting Reading teams) with Reading ahead by 19 wins to 4.

How to follow the game

  1. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  2. Ring/text a mate for updates
  3. Use an iFollow subscription
  4. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

We've got an extra day's rest and they also have a long trip down - after such an intense run of games that could count in our favour

2-0 Preston.

Excited to think of McIntyre getting a start. Hope that Ejaria or Meite is fit, preferably both.

Wycombe and Rotherham were our early warnings that we weren’t quite there felt we were fortunate neither had the quality to break us down, yesterday was our wake up call. Hopefully whatever lessons are there to be learned are learned and not simply brushed off as one bad game.

Is Tom Holmes injured? Bench is increasingly looking depressingly thin. Not the depth to sustain a top finish challenge.

Is it though?

We have THREE first team midfielders out, and can still field a strong first team midfield.

How many midfield or any player for any position do we need?

I personally think having 3 first teamers injured and still having 3 to field IS depth.

Admittedly one of those is a loan, so maybe a permanent signing is needed, but only once that loan player has gone.

What we don't want is a bloated squad like last year. And we need to work on players being out injured.

In a way we're lucky our injuries are stacking up in positions we have most cover.

RB, and attacking midfield.

RB: Yiadom (out), Araruna (out), Esteves, Holmes (out), Watson.

That's five players for one position with three out.

AM/FL/R: Meite (outish) Olise, Ejaria (out), Swift (out), Semedo, Aluko, Tetek(?)

That's six / seven players for three positions with three out.

Similarly strong at CB

CB: Morrison, Moore (out), McIntyre, Holmes (out), Gibson

By contrast if we pick up two injuries in defensive midfield, left back or striker and we're oxf*rd.

DM: Rinomhota, Laurent, Semedo, Tetek - there's some fill in potential here but if Rino and / or Laurent go we're in big trouble. We're yet to see Semedo more defensively.

LB: Richards, Gibson, Bristow

Two injuries hee and we're in deep shit.

ST: Joao, Puscas, Baldock, Meite

Joao and Puscas out totally oxf*rd us.

Gonna call this as a draw. We've had one draw this season. Preston the same, there's came prior to the last six games.

Probably 1-1

Hopefully Meite slots right back in for Aluko and McIntyre for Moore should be fine.

Esteves is showing his age and inexperience which has definitely weakened the defence, but he's got plenty to offer and we've always got a chance to create and score with the likes of Joao, Meite and Olise on the pitch.

Think Preston will be more dispirited by their defeat than we will. Hopefully we can get after them a bit at the start

Think we’ll win this. But then I thought that vs Cov as well
