think Esteves basically played as one. He is always an option further forward as is Richards on the left

But neither go outside their man with pace.
I am with URZZZZ on this and I guess the club might go for one of this type having lost Riquelme to Bournemouth. and weren't able to replace him, which implies that the club would like to have a winger on board.

Richards does and did so a number of times in the last game. I’m sure Esteves can and will as well

I really don’t see a huge amount of difference between them and an ‘out and out’ winger. Not enough to waste a signing on

I think we were more on about impact subs especially after Wednesday night when none of Esteves, Aluko or Baldock offered enough of a change.
Richards is great on the ball but isn't quick nor is anybody playing wide right (with Yiadom injured).

Harris of Wednesday is the type as he showed at the Mad Stad last season and early on in Wednesday's game.

Perhaps we could get Traore from Wolves  and then you might appreciate what a difference a quick winger can make when trying to get behind a defence.
If only McCleary had been 5 years younger.

Richards is certainly quick. Maybe not compared to Traore but he is proper fast, maybe the fastest in the league. I think I already appreciate what a quick winger can bring tbf without needing to watch him.

tbh the best we'd be likely to get is some sort of Josh Sims type who would add little. McCleary of 5 years ago would be great, yeah, but he was PL standard then. Unlikely we'll find someone like that knocking around. I think Esteves is about as good as we'd likely find

NewCorkSeth So 3 of our best players for 1 position.

I'd consider selling one (Semedo makes 4) and Olise covers Meite, while Ejaria covers LF.

I don't think any of them are much better than most of our first XI.

Joao stands out. But are any of them really better than Morrison, Moore, Richards, Cabral, Rinomhota, Meite, Laurent?

Flashier, for sure... better, I don't really think so.

At their respective position and role? I would argue Swift as a deep midfielder without out and out defensive duties is better than Morro, Moore, Richards, Cabral, Rinomhota, Meite and Laurent. Joao certainly not.
As an AMC no. Hes probably not even as good as they are at their best roles.

Ejaria is hard to call because I am still not sure we have seen him play in his best position and role yet.

I think it is silly to take a team with Meite, Ejaria, Olise and Swift and say that 2 of them should be relegated to the bench. Especially when Ejaria is performing very well despite often owing down attacks. He is still creating more chances than most players in the league.

Tbf, I've only said 2 of them should be on the bench if we've got a better LF option along the lines of Meite or a genuine winger.

Ah. Sorry from the context of the conversation I thought you were suggesting we should be looking to find a starter for that position in January. I just dont think its realistic that we will find someone better than Ovie on our budget. Especially in January and with the new rules about foreign signings.

We should be looking.

I'm far from the only one who thinks we need someone more specialist for the left or more wingers.

Plus who knows if Swift will recover fully, he's already had a major injury and problems recovering that has changed his game.

And we could potentially make a sale to fund someone good enough.

John Smith Whilst this fixture should be relatively straightforward, we must be extremely cautious of the quality possessed by Harry Arter. A player of his calibre could really cause us problems. I hope those lucky enough to be in the stadium tomorrow are appreciative of being so lucky to be witnessing him perform.

I am kinda looking forward to actually seeing us play more, though he did seem useful for Ireland, but, yep, consider myself fortunate and grateful. First game since Brum away, and a very different team.

Weren't Southampton fans bigging up Josh Sims as the new Gareth Bale? Hes currently on loan at Doncaster.

For me Swift and Joao are our two best players because the only reason they’re not playing at a higher level is their injury records. Maybe throw Olise in there, as for him it’s just a matter of time, but the rest are here because nobody up there wants them enough. Not to say that they couldn’t hack it if they went up with us, but Swift and Joao are the two who are slumming it down here.

I am quite nervous about today; on paper they have a decent side and now have a decent manager who knows this league.

We will need to play very well to win

Richards is quite quick (but no Any Robertson) when compared to orthodox full-backs but not when thinking of wingers getting round the back of full-backs quickly.
Richards' approach is much more about close control and trickery.

I have been a fan of Richards from when he first came into the side but remember (it seems so long ago now) last season seeing him in a wing-back role or when pushing forward from full-back not having the pace to get past his man on a number of occasions.

Fortunately the weaker side of his game, defending, has come on a bundle, making him now IMHO one of the few that we have who could readily step up to Premier League, preferably with us or perhaps more likely with somebody else.

Presumably, like everybody else, glad to see Meite back.
Expect Semedo to come on in the second half and either get booked or score.

A shame that Blackett isn't up against him-haven't seen their eleven but would lump on us if he were in the side.

This is probably our best starting eleven from who is currently available..

Can’t complain about that XI at all. I don’t think you’d hear many people say that wasn’t the best team we can put out at the moment.

I’d only add in Yiadom for Holmes when fit.

How is swift going to fit into this side when fit. That is the biggest question for me. Laurent rino olise and ejaria are undropable at the moment. Possible ejaria would make way

Injuries often make it easier for managers but with Laurent being an immediate success since coming into the side it would be quite a problem for Velcro.

Far less a problem than wondering what to do if Joao were to get injured.

I think you’re right with Ovie being the one to probably drop out. What it does do, it gives us a) options from the bench b) cover for any injuries.

Also if we’re playing against a weaker side which sets out to contain us, you might play Swift over Rhino or Laurent, just to add that bit of creativity and the need not to play 2 defensively minded players (compared to Swift).
