URZZZZ These nine players cost around £67 million in transfer fees:

Aluko
Baldock
Assombalonga
Fletcher
Diedhiou
Pritchard
Reach
Rhodes
Schindler

All been released on a free this summer. Finances gone mad

We spunked £6m on Aluko from Fulham; Assombolonga cost Boro £14.5m aswell as Fletcher for £7m, Wednesday bought Rhodes for £10.5m, all in the same window

I think the issue with all/most of these players is the wages they were on - unsustainable for the clubs that signed them particularly now.

Assombalonga, in particular, is a case of a player with ample quality but a serious lack of desire to make it to the next level.

Rhodes on the other hand is not as good as he once was, although he ended the season well at Wednesday

Snowball Those are players going from NON-LEAGUE to the top division. = 4 levels.

League 2 to Championship is two levels

There is a lot of talent in the lower leagues

Sorry - i think you misunderstood my post. I wasn't saying that lower league players can't make it at Championship level - i'm saying that it's extremely difficult to judge which ones will, especially from one game. Unless you have an excellent scouting set up, it's always going to be a gamble. For every Shane Long you bring in you're also getting 4 or 5 players that don't work out.

The difference between buying any lower league player and an established Championship footballer is the difference between rolling a dice and hoping for 6 and flipping a coin and calling heads. Both can work out, both can fail, but one is much more likely to succeed.

I would argue that all of them were reasonable signings at the time - well, Aluko was always odd given that it was a position we didn't desperately need to strengthen, but the quality he'd shown in the past made that price sensible.

Of those on that list all but 3 I would not touch with a barge pole. Diedhiou is a good championship striker and would replace Joao if he left. Not as much goal return but good at this level and can hold the ball up.
Reach is the main reason Wednesday almost stayed up. He is a dead ball specialist and would cover swift. He could play across all 5 midfield spots and would be great cover. If we are not looking we should be.
Fletcher is worth a punt, I doubt there are going to be many falling over there selves to sign him. But he is 25 and the season before last he scored 17 he can hold up play aswell and would suit our style.

Fair play I was not expecting that. I was not thinking he was going to be wanted by a premiership side. A good deal for him.

Absolute horrendous footballer. Quite possibly the worst signing of the window before we've even started.

As endorsements go, there are none more glowing than a John Smith smackdown.

Do you think JS is offering odds on that one ?

"Harry Anderson deserves a fresh start after outstanding Lincoln City service - Lincolnshire Live" https://www.lincolnshirelive.co.uk/spor ... 493617.amp

Saw this name mentioned on Twitter, 24 year old winger from Lincoln available on a free. Just speculation but may be worth a look?

God no. He's the epitome of overrated youngster that's actually bang average and never proved anything anywhere ending up with a nothing career.

Can I assume the phrase 'released on a free' is used where the poster thinks the player is useless whilst 'out of contract' is the term to use for a decent option ?
