Brentford Play Off losses.

by Westwood52 » 26 May 2021 14:16

Mathew Syed s father in law, bemoaned Brentford’s three play losses. He should cocoa.I have been to four play off losses, plus an FA Cup semi final loss. The Synod Cup win seems like another world.
That said I hope Brentford get over the line this time.Swansea are one of the worst teams I have ever seen.

Brentford have lost in 4 play-off finals just like us but they also have 5 semi-final defeats to our 3.

Brentford have the most play-off appearances without earning promotion and can make it an even 10 if they lose to Swansea.

I think Leeds and Ipswich too.

I do like Brentford and wish them every success at Wembley and next season, but, more pettiness from me, I sort of want them to keep their worse-than-us play-off record intact.

Preston won a play-off so they immediately get discounted.

I can only recall two semi final defeats to Wolves and Burnley.

Sorry my mistake, for some reason I was telling myself Walsall was a semi-final defeat.

So we're pretty good at getting to finals in that case.

Can't be bothered to look up but think it is 3.... this season, 2005 lost out to West Ham, Brighton under Adkins when Ulloa scored for them in injury time last game when we drew with Burnley who were already up ....luckily Palace did them in the play offs

From the wiki link:

Reading, Brentford, Leeds United, Bristol City and Sheffield United are the only clubs to have lost play-off finals at three different venues.

Where's the third venue?? Do new & old Wembley count as 2?

Yes. Look further down the list and you will see Crystal Palace have won in four venues , which are listed.

Christ even Aldershot, have one win to their credit. If I remember right They beat Wolves over two legs? Under the original format of the final being played home and away.

Sounds like the only chance Brentford have of winning a playoff final is if they come up against Reading or at the very least they will lose to a club and set of fans who can genuinely sympathise with their pain.

3 I think.

Coppell
Adkins
Paunovich

I think we've finished top 7 in 13 of the last 30 seasons.

When I thought we'd make the play-offs I did think about the theoretical situation where we play each other in the final, I suppose the only logical ending would be a never-ending penalty shootout.

Just to rub it in, Reading and Brentford remain the only 2 clubs to finish runner up outside the top flight and not be promoted. At least since 1950 odd when they introduced Div 4. Cursed.
