Hendo One for those who say Pauno should’ve changed it/bought players on.

Who exactly? What else could he have done?

His hands are incredibly tied at the moment

Don’t think anyone could disagree his hands are tied but there’s pretty much always an opportunity to change things up

The entire midfield were a shambles the second half (poss Swift excluded). I’m not sure it could have got worse. Could have used Holmes as a third CB with the persistent crossing in from them. Doesn’t mean you have to be ultra defensive, adjust to the system. Could have given Puscas a strike partner, press from the front, stop the flow of Blackpool’s pressure. Push Yiadom further forward and play a wider game, try and give the opposition something else to think about rather than an insistence on cramming through the middle all game. None particularly ideal but persevering with something that clearly wasn’t working was daft and ultimately didn’t work

Anyway, it was evident last season that Paunovic didn’t change things up quickly enough when it wasn’t going our way (even with perceived “poor” first team players - they weren’t a bunch of kids). In game tactical decisions a big part of the game. Seem to struggle with it

If he had bought Holmes on, he would’ve copped so much flack for making a “defensive” substitution as he so often did last season/has done earlier this season.

I just don’t think with the players he had available last night there was a whole lot else he could’ve done.

Maybe he is set in his ways, but so are plenty of other managers and for the most part, over the last 2 seasons, his way has worked, whether people want to admit it or not.

I think most people understand how the flow of the game works though. Against QPR, for example, we were on top so replacing the ST with a CB didn’t make much sense as it invites pressure (which it did). Yesterday, we were under huge swathes of pressure so IMO a change was necessary to try and stem the flow. You’re right that he still may have been criticised but that’s football fans for you

Under no illusion that Paunovic has done a good job overall but there are recurring mistakes which is a major concern

NathStPaul There are a large number of supporters who simply will refuse to blame Liam Moore for anything because he is a nice guy, has been quite accessible etc. The facts are he has been really poor for about 2 seasons now, continuously lets us down and puts a lot of pressure on our defenders and goalkeeper. Should have been sold a long time ago.

not really debating that, but just that would just argue Ian's point that we started crumbling as soon as we conceded and this is in some way down to Moore

As it was he had a decent first half, but can take a share of the blame for the second half performance - but in all honesty it was our midfield who got totally overrun which was the main reason we lost, not Moore's lack of concentration or calmness

Yeah - some people have to have scapegoats for any defeat, always been the way

Snowflake Royal I don’t think it's any coincidence that the first time we concede under sustained pressure with Moore back in the team we completely fall apart and panic.

It's exactly what was happening before he got injured.

Harsh Ian. We lost last night because our midfield was abysmal. Dann and Moore had done well to keep them out until the 68th minute.
First Blackpool goal was fortuitous. A lucky corner from which a shot took a deflection and went in.
Second goal could be down to either Moore or Dann leaving the player ummarked in the box. Third goal was just stupidity from Yiadom. All brought about though because Blackpool were totally dominant.

He's the captain. It's his job to sort out the team on the pitch in game. The nerves spread from him.

Not at all

Midfield cost us the game yesterday for not being able to string three passes together. Isn’t an individual scapegoat but a collective one. Just made the point that Paunovic just let it happen and did nothing to change it

Don’t think people could argue Moore has been a disappointment the last couple of seasons after his start here. But blaming him for last night is just a bit :|

some telling stats on whoscored. 42% of the play was in our defensive third = compared to 17% in the away third (higher than i expected tbh)

On the average player positions, only Puscas spent more time in the Blackpool half than our own (Swift bang on half way). All but the Blackpool keeper and CBs spent more time in our half than their own

Come off it. That’s down to the manager. The defence was constantly under pressure because they were not being protected by the midfield. Down to Pauno to change things not Moore.

A style of play that with a win last night would have seen us go in to 5th place.

The manager isn’t on the pitch. The captain is. The manager needs to communicate and make changes. But the captain has to lead.

I have seen enough this season to suggest we are more than good enough to finish in the top ten even with the points deduction. I am pretty sure many of us would have taken that if offered before the season started so anything else is a bonus really. A convincing win last night would have been really good for morale though, I do worry about the psychological effect it might have on the players.

This is something that happened plenty of times last season too (I.e the problem of conceding quick fire goals and not regrouping) when Moore was injured. Although I guess it was probably Esteves’ fault then

Convinced if Morrison and Dann were the back two last night and Morrison was captain, you wouldn’t bring it up

The manager can see what’s happening and change things. Moore was far too busy defending. He can’t do the midfielders work for them. They didn’t do their jobs.

Moore was excellent last night - shame those in front of him badly let him down.

I’m not say it isn’t but with all the leadership and organisation in the world you cannot do the work for the midfielders. It was clear in the first half we were struggling to contain them so Pauno should have thought about changing the formation and failed to do so.

And I've criticised that, Pauno failed big last night. But Moore could have tried to get things better organised and given them a rocket to make better decisions.

He's not a good defender and he's not a good captain.

He defended ok last night. Ultimately our midfield offered no protection at all and it was a matter of time before we conceded. We were outplayed. That’s not down to Moore. Too many players played poorly. Blaming the captain seems a bit daft to me.

Defence been under too much pressure all season. Lot of blame to Moore, Morrison and Rafael for the amount of goals conceded early on in the season (and perhaps deservedly so) but we let so many crosses in each game. Not only that, but the midfield rarely win the second ball from any clearances. How many times have we now conceded from a ball into the box/second ball from a ball into the box? Basic probability that the more you allow into the box, the more you’re likely to concede

Collectively, the defending has been lacking from the entire team. Simply allow too many shots/crosses against us per game. Sure, between Peterborough and Barnsley, the defensive numbers were strong. Certainly rode our luck in that period though
