From Despair To Where?

Sutekh And once the FL confirm the deduction you may see Peterborough United sue Reading, presumably for loss of earnings (though IMO they should really sue the FL seeing it was their decision to only deduct 6 points last season).

https://www.peterboroughtoday.co.uk/spo ... es-4056219

Their argument would be that we broke the rules so we should be the ones paying for the loss of earnings? Especially if the EFL are only acting once our accounts have been sent to them (even though it doesn't make sense why they didn't impose a deduction as and when we broke the rules because you'd imagine they'd have been keeping extra tabs on our finances).

The way I see it, if it's the 6 suspended points being docked then they've had a year to challenge it and they should have challenged it at the time.

If its a new 6pt deduction, it's got fcuk all to do with them as they're in a different league.

Agree, if they felt that we were "under punished" by the EFL, them, along with plenty of other clubs, have had a lot of time to say so. Were there rumours that Barnsley were looking at that last season? Ironically when they were the at their closest to survival.

Different situation to Derby though where they didn't co-operate with the EFL and it delayed the punishment, we have been (i assume) up front with them.

Local press report -

https://www.readingchronicle.co.uk/spor ... egal-case/

the waters muddy slightly as the Posh were relegated last season, but would have survived had the Royals been deducted 12 points immediately.

Would Peterborough have definitely survived and Reading definitely been relegated last season even after an extra 6 point deduction? Surely we were on the beach once we knew we were safe and there would only have been a couple of point difference between the two teams based on the final table so relatively easy to recoup? Not sure of the legal side of hypothetical points totals...

They hammered a Blackpool reserve side last game too (when down), if something riding on it I'm sure Blackpool would have approached it differently

Knowing they were relegated surely allowed them to play without pressure too, if they knew that getting a result could have seen them safe, they might have bottled it.

They'd get nowhere suing us, we didn't apply the penalty or decide to suspend half of it. Plus other clubs have had the same before us. Their argument would be with the EFL and they'll still get nowhere.

I like their videos, gives a good insight into how bad/good things are at certain clubs. You know you're in a bad place if they make videos on your club though.

A pretty fair summary of events.

Apologies if this has been said before but in my opinion the only parties who should know about the threat of the points deduction at this stage are the EFL, the independent panel who adjudicate and Reading FC and at the moment everyone else should be in blissful ignorance.

Even once the threat had been leaked pundits such as Simon Jordan amongst others should not be passing judgment when presumably, like the rest of us, they don’t know exactly what specific offence we are being charged with. Or do they ? That nice Mr McAnthony at Peterborough claims to have been ‘monitoring and watching‘ the situation since last season. What exactly does that mean ? Does he work part time undercover in our finance department ?

Of course once the genie was out of the bottle there was bound to be speculation but we won’t know the exact details of our offences until the EFL issue the formal findings of the panel and pundits should refrain from deciding to condemn us until or unless it’s shown that we deliberately flaunted the business plan.

I think what you're talking about is gossip. It is literally a core element of the sports broadcasting sector. If you didn't have pundits speculating on the radio or newspaper journos jumping to conclusions then you wouldn't have sports radio stations or newspapers.

There would be no pundits if they had to only talk about facts and things they know.

So....what's happening?

The Daily Mail, who broke this, Ince (albeit last week) and various other sources (here and twitter) said it was 6 points down this week and as yet no announcement.

Are we trying to get it reduced to a suspended points reduction, which would seem plausible if offences were pre business plan, as suggested by Ince, or are the EFL looking at a higher punishment which we we trying to bring back to 6?

Is this delay good or bad news?

Your guess is as good as anyone's.

I doubt Ince is a particularly reliable source. He's just the first team manager. Don’t see why he'd be involved, just vaguely kept informed on what the club thinks might happen that's relevant to matchday.

The EFL will probably just wait until the end of the season and then deduct whatever points are needed to get us relegated.

He completely ignored the worst thing that has happened at the club though.

I'd imagine the first team manager would be a pretty reliable source considering the points deduction affects our position in the league. Even if it didn't I think it would be pretty daft to not say something to the first team manager, although yes, I can't see why he'd be involved in discussions.

At the end of the day losing 2 in a row and seeing the bottom three all win 2 in a row is effectively the same as having a 6 point deduction, at least this way the form of the bottom three remains cr@p.
