Bowman's Quiver
strap Robert Maxwell - a true socialist! Of course, we are now lumbered with more of his ilk in Blair and Brown.

I sincerely hope they go they same way as that fat old cnut.

No need for that mate.

You might not agree with their politics but Robert Maxwell they ain't.

True, Maxwell only robbed £400M from the Mirror Group Pension funds, and was only an alleged war criminal in one war.

Brown has syphoned off £4Billion per year since 1998, whilst Blair has sanctioned, and contributed to at least 2 allegedly illegal invasions of sovereign nations. What wonderful men!

John Madejski for Prime Minister!

Tredder's dad saved RFC and he was a socialist. I helped by going on the anti-Maxwell 'march of the coffin' the day we played Millwall. Maxwell had so much front he also turned up.

I cant Believe that you guys are trying to say that Brown and Blair are socialists!!!

Tory Blair could be Thatcher in disguise

They are more Tory than the current conservative party.

True socialists do not and will not agree with any of the current Labour parties policies.

I'm certainly not a supporter of Blair or this Government. However, the reason why the terrorists committed the atrocity on 9/11, was to provoke areaction from the Bush government that would be so extreme (given Bush's reasonable attitude to foreign policy) that the whole of the Moslem World would rise up against the West. It was almost entirely due to the efforts of the Blair administration that the reaction to 9/11 was more measured and reasonable. Unless, of course, you are of the opinion that a country (Afghanistan) run by a regime that nurtured and developed the organisation that did it's very best to destroy Western civilisation should have been left alone to have another go.

Call it an illegal war if you like, you are entitled to whatever opinion you wish to hold, no matter how ill-informed.

You wicked, wicked man!

Seriously though, just thinking about the events back then makes me go cold. We have a lot to thank Smee, Tranter, Madejski, McGhee, Quinn, Gooding, Pardew and Sir Steve for. Doesn't matter what happens tomorrow, even if we get stuffed 0-5, this thread brings everything into perspective! Without these guys, we'd probably be watching AFC Reading v Reading Town in the Combined COunties League, rather than Reading FC v Manchester United in the English Premier League.

Sobering thought.

Smee had the same vision as Madejski. He just didn't have the money. Let's not forget Madejski didn;t have the money either when Smee stepped in in 1983 so you'd have to call it a joint effort.

Smee had plans for a 10,000 all-seater at Smallmead - which given the crowds in 1980s would have seemed ample.

Royal With Cheese May he rot in hell for what he did to the pensioners of the many companies he "legally" robbed - never mind what he tried to do to Reading.

Now I'm getting confused. Are we talking about Maxwell or Brown? :?

Damn right! Back that claim up!
Apart from being there at the time, I also have plenty of TV coverage from that period. Without Roger, we wouldn't be here today. So, please stop making silly commnets and be grateful that Roger and co existed at the time. I don't know whether you were or weren't there but we were THAT CLOSE to be coming TVR that it frightens me now to think about it. So, when we take the field against Man U tomorrow I for one will cherish just how far we've come. If they do us 4, 5 or 6 nil NOTHING can take that thought away. Personally I'm grateful every time I walk into the Mad Stad and I'm still struck by where we are and what we've become.

I for one won't waste it tomorrow by booing Ronaldo / Rooney or whoever. I'll spend my energy cheering on the Royals and hope that we can turn the number 13 volume up to 11 - we made 10 at the Man City game... so just like the amplifiers on Spinal Tap, surely there can be an 11 ??!

Come on URZ!
