The pitch

by Dirk Gently » 17 Dec 2006 12:29

Yesterday was the first match this season where it was noticable that the rugger-buggers had had some effect - the ball bobbled about a fair amount and one or two passes were misplaced or not controlled properly because of that.

Not an excuse for the second half perfromance by any means, but it can't help anyone.

Didn't notice it too much yesterday but I hope we will ask them to leave next year (assuming we stay up) For what we get in income (is it £500k?) it's just now worth it

Except that they have a long contract which would require us to pay compensation if we want them to leave.

I believe they pay us about 40k a game for using the stadium which in the Prem is a couple of players weekly wage. The damage to the pitch and the space taken up in the megastore the extra work for the ticket office is it worth keeping them?

More factless crap. The pitch surface is fine, the whole point of the Desso system is that it stays flat even when there is no grass. The ball ran as true yesterday as it alays does.

We lost fair and square - and London Irish can't be blamed for that.

In that case the ball was not round yesterday, because I certainly saw it bobble on a fair number of occasions. In fcat, if you look at the replay of Oster's pass to Shoery that led to the goal it certainly doesan't bounce true.

NB I've already said that the pitch wasn't an excuse for the result, and I'm only using that pass as an example as it'll be easier to see the replay of that one.

Whilst not responsible for us losing, the rugger buggers have very definitely messed up the pitch. It looked pretty poor from the East Stand during the game and the tv pictures really showed how badly it had been cut up, particularly down the central section from one end to the other. Not really surprising when 30 overweight men were allowed to conduct a shoving and sliding match all over it last weekend following so much heavy rain.

The pitch wasn't looking as good as usual.
Can't blame the performance on that though, unfortunately.

I thought the pitch looked considerably worse for wear than it has done for a number of years. Last season it certainly wasn't as bad as that. It looked pretty bare down the middle, and the ball was certainly bobbling. Having said that, it would have cut up easily yesterday because of the amount of rain we've had recently.

The contract would probably have clauses for us as well, should we reach the premiership.

Only not too much green down the middle!

Anyway, southern pitches should look a lot better than those north of the border - far better weather and more daylight!

Considering all the rain and the rugby, i thought the pitch looked in great nick.

Rugby didn't seem to hinder us too much when we went 30+ games undefeated at home.

All the more reason to get it out wide, keep it out of the 'bobble zone'... Oh yea, we didn't second half, never mind.

Execpt rugby tends to wear out pitches in two furrows roughly between the 6 yard and 18 yard box 0 i.e. the 'channels' - so hugging the touchline is fine, but our usual one-twos from out wide would suffer. Personally thought the pitch was fine on Saturday

Perhaps the pitch was looking rough as it was last laid several months ago and had too much to drink the day before

Anyone think the playing surface should have dealt with the conditions a lot better today?

I think the system is irrelevant to the drainage - the Desso system is just what reinforces the grass roots, as I understand it.

Isn't the stadium built on top of some kind of plastic "bubble" or soemthing? That can't help the drainage.
