When was the last time? No.2

by scutterbucket » 11 May 2007 20:08

With a win in our next game possibly deciding whether we get into Europe (depending on other results), when was the last time we won a game where that one result would decide something big, i.e; getting promoted, avoiding relegation, getting into the playoffs?

We lost both of our play off finals. We drew at Brentford and Leicester. The last time I can actually think of is Brighton at home in 1994.

But a points record doesn't change a Club.

Before the Brighton 2-0 to secure promotion to the 2nd tier, I can only think of the Simod Cup. The 5-0 v Derby to clinch the championship wasn't that critical as we would still have had 4 games to secure the title had we lost.

Another failure was the home defeat to Wolves a few years back when a win would have taken us into teh play-offs.

Good question, worthy of a bit of research ....

OooooH ... what about the defeat of Wolves a few years ago to secure our place in the second tier for another seaosn? Not quite the last game of the season, but still a huge pressure match.

Playoff semi second leg against Wigan? Although I suppose the final made it all a bit irrelevant.

I considered that one but, as you said, the final made it irrelevant.

3-3 home to Bournemouth = secures playoffs

2-2 away at Tranmere....Rougier scored = still in the automatics (1-1 Brentford secured the promotion)

3-1 win against Crewe...secured promotion (circa 1974 ish)

(games that I was at, without referring to books to jog the old grey matter)

The 5-0 win over Derby last year confirmed us as Champions.

Brighton in 94 wasn't the last game of the season - Bmth away was.

These are all last games of the season that we won and could have affected the final outcome. I may have missed a few.

1989 won 4-2 at Chesterfield to save ourselves from Div 4 after being 0-2 at half time.

1983 won 1-0 v Wrexham which would have saved us from Div 4 if Exeter hadn't drawn .

1979 won 3-0 at Vale to win Div 4 title

1970 won 8-0 v Southport to clinch place in Watney Cup (we only needed to score 3).

1967 won 2-1 at Workington to be in a promotion place in Div 3 for 15 minutes but Boro caught us.

1927 won 7-1 v Brentford to clinch Div 3 S title.

AthleticoSpizz 3-3 home to Bournemouth = secures playoffs

Slightly confused mate. Our playoff spotwas clinched long before the last day of the season. We finished that season on 85 points, while Wigan finished on 69 in 6th. That game was ultimately a "nothing" game for us as we were 5 points ahead of Walsall in 4th and 4 points behind Rotherham in 2nd. The game was massive for Bournemouth as if they'd have beaten us they'd have been in the playoffs and Wigan wouldn't.
