No. We are not entering the Intertoto, so that back door option is not available.

Intertoto != Fair Play

Three UEFA Cup first qualifying round places are available for clubs for Fair Play. The nation with the best Fair Play record overall gets a place, as do two others drawn at random from all those nations whose overall Fair Play record is above a certain threshold. One team from each of these three nations gets a place - that team being the one with the best Fair Play record that has not qualified for European competition by other means.

Why aren't we? Is it our three red cards that have let us down?

Didn't Sweden get the extra spot?

Sweden got the automatic spot for topping the fair play league. There's one other spot available for another country which is awarded by drawing lots - I think - the team that is top of their fair play league gets it, which I think is lead by Villa.

After 36 games we were 8th so I doubt we are top now.

In terms of red and yellow cards, we are second equal with Portsmouth (Liverpool come top, but they already qualify for European competition, anyway)

The other marks are awarded by some system which I do not understand, but seem to be biased towards the team with the quietest fans.

It's to do with how positive the support is - so booing referees (and Andy Johnson!) and trying to wind up away fans gets you marked down.

If it were just on cards, we'd be second behind Liverpool.

Incidentally, according to this, Blackburn have been the worst offenders for the last 3 seasons. Which I believe coincides with when Hughes joined them as manager. I've never liked him.

I thought Coppell said if we were offered this route in then he would turn it down? Just can't remember where, but who cares as we didn't get that option either.

Villa lose out. Teams from Finland and Norway pulled out of the hat.
