what the papers say... Nicky Shorey

by thefruits » 02 Jun 2007 08:18

Too good to be lost elsewhere.... any other highlights ?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.j ... geng02.xml

'Over at left-back, Reading's Nicky Shorey enjoyed a terrific debut; nothing flashy, no buccaneering runs forward, just the appliance of the qualities of concentration and good tackling that have served him well throughout the season. Few men can have spent their last night as a bachelor so constructively. Shorey will not be short of material for his wedding speech today; he can reminisce about he kept Ronaldinho and Kaka at bay.'

Good article. I hope he plays on Wednesday though!

Times player ratings...

Nicky Shorey 6

Amazed to start off a memorable weekend with a first England cap the night before his wedding, but played well. Forced Ronaldinho to come inside to exploit space in front of England’s defence and got forward to provide a good cross for Smith.

From the guardian

There should be a broad contentment for McClaren and players such as the debutant Nicky Shorey found their place in the script without much trouble.

Indie describes him as 'solid if unspectacular', which to be honest is just what you'd want from a debutant full back playing against Brazil !

Now that photo you should send to the club programme for inclusion in our first home game next season.

Not really a paper, but:

http://www.football365.com/story/0,1703 ... 53,00.html

Only sentiment can spare Shorey a proper critique. As a Reading player, he was competent. Judged as an England player, or at least on the basis of what it is reasonable to expect from an England player, Shorey was mediocre. Although he was not exposed in defence, his limitations were painfully apparent whenever he ventured into support of Joe Cole.
Rating: 6.

Mediocre???

"As a Reading player, he was competant" - Has he left the club?

Idiots! Ok he didn't get forward much but we were playing Brazil. It was better than having Cashley Cole in there bombing forward like a headless chicken and leaving us exposed at the back for Ronaldihno to roam free.

Laughable really, obviously someone with a dislike for reading, possibly a chelsea fan. The BBC ratings of players and paper reports suggest he was one of the better england players. What a scabby little site like that thinks desn't matter to anyone.

BBC News

So England come away from their first match at the new Wembley with a 1-1 draw against Brazil. At the start of the match, England would have been quite content to come away with that result. But having conceded a goal in stoppage time would have been a little disheartening.

But to be fair to England they kept a potent Brazil attack quiet in the second half and will go into Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia taking a lot of positives.

Nicky Shorey played well throughout the match, while David Beckham and Michael Owen made competent comebacks.

Meanwhile, both Kieron Dyer and Stuart Downing looked lively when they came on after the break and sparked England into life.

It will be interesting to see if coach Steve McClaren sticks with the same team on Wednesday.

I presume writing for this site is what Oliver Holt does in his spare time.

The "reporter" obviously didn't acually watch the game! I made a point of watching Cole and Shorey through the whole game. Cole actually passed to Shorey ONCE in the whole 90 mins! (Well however long COle was on for). Shorey was always making himself available for Cole, but Cole ignored him for pretty much all the match.

That might be a nice stat in theory but Cole passed to Shorey a lot more than that. OK they were mainly 5 yard lay offs but it was way more than one ! We are talking Joe Cole here aren't we ?

On this England debut against BRAZIL, Nicky Shorey should have been bombing it forward

I can't tell if it came across on TV, but there were numerous occasions in the second half where Shorey did his bit for a good overlapping run, but where for Reading the ball would be laid back to him to cross in, it never came back to him from Cole. He either go on a run himself, invariably until he lost the ball, or he'd play inside, where we were having no joy. The only time England looked remotely dangerous was when we got it wide, but we hadly ever tried to do so.

Shorey played to the plans of McClaren. Surely this is a clear observation. Last night was much about sticking to the basics and avoiding a moral destructive defeat. This would require the defence to be conservative and not 'buccunearing', what was shorey? exactly this, solid and conservative. When the option to overlap was the appropriate choice, he did so. It was Cole arrogance that was to the detriment of Englands quest for a victory, not Shoreys, perhaps Shorey should have showed a little more punch and DEMANDED the ball and if not, bollck Cole for being a selfish cnut.

But for what Shorey did, against the opposition, and what he probably was asked to do..

I would rate him a 7.

I noticed that Shorey made himself available for a lot of passes with good positioning, and as a result saw a lot of the ball. In a game where there was little movement, his options on what to do next were limited, but at least he didn't waste possession.
