2 world wars, 1 world cup Question. I'm a little confused and forgetful. Was this the first time Cisse started as CB for us? Was he generally used as midfielder?

Yes he's been playing central midfield, though he played the second half at CB against Spurs.

Apparently he's played at the back a lot with other club(s)

Spent last season playing at CB for Boavista, according to my Portuguese connections...

And according to Coppell's Boavista DVDs, as revealed in his post-match interview on BBCRB.

so why exactly have we been playing him in midfield?

He looks like a fish out of water in midfield - the game passes him by. Surprise surprise, in defence he suddenly looks comfortable and confident.

What was the management thinking on this one?

Apparently midfield is his preferred position. He can/has play/played both, but stated that his preference was in midfield.

He may prefer midfield, but his experience is in defence and it shows

I completely agree. Hopefully he'll stick to his task and provide the answer to the "centre-back pickle" we've got ourselves in, as Coppell called it.

IMHO I've not seen a centre back who puts his foot in at the right moment since we had Matty Upson on loan. Well done Mr Cisse!

PS Can't remember the last time a cameo performance from a substitute has brought so many positive comments (and rightly so).

Not normally a full member of the RTG club but I feel an awful lot better tonight.

Thought Cisse played well in the second half against Villa when he moved into defence, then thought he was excellent second half when he moved to centre back against Spurs and then yesterday he was fantastic in defence against one of the best teams in the country. Well Done Mr Cisse!!!

SC said he was bought as a midfielder but given that his best performances have been in central defence and he was playing there for Boavista I would rather suggest that SC needs to review that and given our general crapness in that position perhaps he maybe the answer (well at least in the short term). You never know if we keep him there for eht next 3 or 4 games and he's just as impressive then perhaps we could look to ultimately partner him with Sonko (assuming Sonko regains his form).

Great chant by the way, nice and simple - although TBM asked at one point what's that they're chanting!

It was "K'lifa Cisse" in the NE corner.

Didn't like it.

i thought the cisse chant was quite good, easy to sing along to and it sounds quite loud!

But if Cisse keeps playing like he does, Sonko will have no chance of getting into the team, cisse and bikey at the back would be immense

When Coppell was speaking to the press afterwards, he said that Cisse was slightly injured and Ingamarsson had been sick, and that it was a makeshift centreback combination, now does that mean that Pearce is Injured or that he just doenst regard him as a first team player?

In the Friday press conference, he said Pearce was possible, but noted the danger of his being taken apart and said he was unlikely to be the option.

Cisse has played CB against top, top Portuguese clubs.

But he was tremendous yesterday, I think Vidic is one of the best defenders around and comparing his performance with Cisse's, there wasn't much difference.
Really encouraging, and it was good that the North Stand paid tribute to that, quickly spread through the ground.

Reading fans were realising that not only every single player for Reading was 100% effort, there was a lot of skill, strength and determination.
Cisse gave the Midfield a lot of confidence to attack and try to dominate.

Very, very encouraging for the MUST WIN games in the future.

Really was seriously pleased with his performance. You would never have thought he was a centre midfielder with the way he plays there, but as centre half he looks at home.

Most defo the best centre half performace this season.
