Penalties

by Southbank Old Boy » 05 Aug 2008 21:58

Just noticed this story on the EP's site

http://www.getreading.co.uk/sport/football/readingfc/s/2033233_royals_pair_share_spotkick_duty

With our not so great penalty record I'm not sure it really matters who takes them, but surely there comes a point where the manager has to put his foot down and make sure our best penalty taker is going to be taking the penalties.

This just seems a little amateurish to me.

It's more important for someone to want to take it IMO. Saying that the system of your turn until you missed worked fairly well.

I agree the taker has to want to take it, and in any case where they're not up for it (due to injury or their having a bit of a shocker) it should go to the next in line, but to say I won it I'm taking it really is playground stuff isn't it?

I think I'm right in saying that Coppell has always said he leaves it up to the players on the pitch to decide who's going to take it but I still that is seriously flawed as you end up with arguements over who's having it.

Noel Hunt is meant to be a good penalty taker...and so is his brother. When we had Kits he was the best penalty taker imo as he was so confident and just smashed them in but he didn't take that many so I wouldn't count on having a regular penalty taker this season.

I think Murty v QPR is the best penalty I've seen a Reading player take in years, top right hand corner. Keeper can't reach that even if he guesses right. In fact this bemuses me about penalty takers, the often try and outwit the keeper and things like that. Learn to smash it into the top corner from 12 yards and keeper isn't able to reach up there in that sort of time.

Or just hit it low and hard in the bottom corner.

closer you aim to the corner the more likely you are to miss which is almost a hangable offence for a professional footballer. And it appeals to smug tossers to look really nonchalent and make the keeper look like an idiot.

I don't really mind who takes them, but I hope they all practice getting the ball in the net regularly and often.

The best penalty tecnique is the 'One step, bang'. That's how I take them and I've never missed a penalty in my life, and is modelled on Jimmy-Floyd's method. The keeper doesn't have any chance of reading you, you have a lot more accuracy as you're not jeapordising anything with a run up, and if you slightly lean back you can literally pass it into the top corner or, with a bit more power, hit it into the inside netting.

I don't understand why players have half a mile run ups and do that annoying shuffle. Just get your composure and nessle it in, no fuss.

EDIT: The above is a lie. I missed a penalty last season actually but the goals seemed tiny for some reason, and the posts were square and not round - proper old skool.

West Ham was missed, Portsmouth was missed.

They both spring to mind instantly.

Two out of how many?

Southbank Old Boy and where did I limit that record to one season?

Well, perhaps we should find the stats for penalties over the last, perhaps, 3-4 seasons to see if your statement is actually correct?

Well, it was you who questioned Reading's inability to take penalties, maybe you should prove it.
