Favourite Reading XI

by mini _dariusz » 18 Oct 2008 13:43

Based on nothing but pure favouritsm.

Mine is subject to change once others remind me of players i have forgotten......

Steve Mautone (Just cos he's an Aussie)
Andy Bernal (Another Aussie, loved the hair and a peeping tom)
Paul Bodin (Dunno why, prob cos he's welsh and to me was considered a "big player signing"
Adie Williams (local lad)
John Mackie (oxf*rd loved it)
Glen Little (oozed class)
Harper (funny guy)
Parky (got stuck in)
Convey (FILF)
Cureton (dont think i need to comment on this one, (Brentford))
Butler (Class)

Subs:

Matthew Upson (was oxf*rd awesome !)
Kevin Watson (class)
Johnny Salad (Mainly from his Palace days)
Andy Hughes (Always gave 100%)
Forster
Rougier
Doyler

Shaka

Murts Adie Bikey Shorey

Ooh ahh Scott Taylor Parkinson Osborne Hunty

Doyle Jimmy Quinn

Subs: Can I have seven?

Marcus
Wdowczyk
Little
Kitson
Gilkesy
Sidwell
Archie (despite his pen).

There are so many but first thoughts produce this lot:-
Shaka

Johnny Walker
Adie Williams
Darius
Colin Meldrum

Neil Webb
Mick Gooding
Simon Osborn
Michael Gilkes

Dave Kitson
Kerry Dixon

Subs:-
Marcus
Martin Hicks
Parky
Richie Bowman
Tommy Jenkins
Denis Allen
Trevor Senior

To complete a squad of 22:-
Steve Sidwell
Dean Horrix
George Harris
Keith Curle

Manager:-
Mark McGhee

Not many defenders but we would score more than the opposition.
As the original poster said-these are very much personal favourites without justification.
In time the likes of Kevin Doyle and Bikey might join the above.

My list is mostly made up of players of the 58/68 period when I watched most home games and several away. Some of the players if not well known by H.N.A.ers are well worth looking up in ROYALS REMEMBERED.

Wilkie
Neate
Adie Williams
Richardson
Scarrott
Pat Terry
Douggie Webb
Gilkes
Wheeler
Dennis Allen
Walker

David Jones
Thornhill
Evans
Spiers

The other fact about these players was that they were all good for a laugh sometimes unintentionally.

I would not say Rouge was in my favourite Reading FC team but i will always have a soft spot for him after he came on as a sub in the Thames Valley Derby and scored two late goals to beat the Pox.

My Reading Team

Shaka/Death (Could not choose one over the other)

Lindon Jones, Aidie Williams, Darius, Mark White

Gilkes, Sanchez, Webb, Little

Friday, Senior

Subs
Death/Shaka, Jerry Williams, Doyle, Bremner and Ivar

Manager Mark Mcghee.

Fav kit 1970's blue and white hoops ie Robin Friday stylie

Shaka

Murts

Superman (05-06 and first half of 06-07)
um Reeves (only because my dad used to rave about him and our left backs have generally been poor, excluding Shorey)

Gilksey OR Kebe
Parky
Harps (for his Liverpool goal)
Little

Quinn
Kitson

Subs: USA, Dariusz, Shorey, Sidwell, Doyle, Cureton, Lita (if it wasn't for the 'boro goal this spot would go to Fozzy).

And your dad was right. Very pleased that one of my occasional visits down for a match coincided with Bomber's death so that I was there to share in the tribute paid to him.

Love the look of your back four FWTD. A bit of everything, power, pace, class, composure, grit, determination and leadership amongst those four players.

Our midfield was wonderful in those years. That's why I had two of them in my first team and one on the bench...

You are Alan Sedunary and I claim my £5!! Wondered what your NHA ID was Alan - and now we know!!

How about this rogues gallery?

Simon Sheppard or Peter van Der Kwaak - (this team is so bad it would need 2 keepers!)

Jimmy Crawford
Elroy Kromheer
Martin James
Paul Bodin

Michael Meaker
Paul Lemon
Paul Holsgrove
John Oster

Keith Scott
Paul Brayson

There is one current member of our first team squad who would walk into this side, but of course it wouldn't be cricket to name him.
