Shooting practice

by JR » 20 Dec 2009 08:53

Was anyone else disturbed by the shooting drill before the game?

Basically the forwards and midfielders took it in turns to play a one-two with the coach and then had to try and beat hamer in goal.

After about 30 efforts they managed a measly 2 goals between them. If thats the strike rate with no defenders its no wonder we are destroying teams but letting ourselves down in front of goal.

I think you've misunderstood the drill.

It's a drill to reinforce the need to get back into position as soon as the shot misses.

I am hoping you are expressing irony with this comment. A random selection of the away fans would have done the drill better.

Is it not a drill for the keeper to warm up? When I've seen this stuff the attackers are often putting in shots designed to be hard, but saveable.

Shane Long did this at Didcot pre-season with no keeper and he still couldn't score!

I know what you mean, but this was definitely a striker drill. Over half of the shots were put wide, so it didnt really do hamer much good!

Only marek was any good - which begs the question why does he not shoot more in matches.

Shane long was absolutely shocking, with all 3 scuffed wide feebily.

That might have been the case but for he fact it was the substitute keeper in goal.

What's more, on far too many occasions the shots aren't saveable because they are high, wide or a combination of both!!

On several occasions in the past it was mentioned that the likes of Lita and Harper stayed behind after training to do extra shooting practice. The current forwards/midfielders could clearly do with following their example.

Bertrand hit a rasper.
Get him to train them.

I saw Burnley do the same shooting drill in the playoffs against us and thought it showed their focus on scoring, getting them in the shooting frame of mind. They did actually score most of the shots though.

Thought it was a good idea at the time.

It's become a running joke around the people I sit with in the North Stand. Every warm up the shooting is so woefully pathetic that they even miss the two nets next to the goal. At the Blackpool game they managed to hit the girl on the row in front of me square on the forehead (Bl00dy good header though).

I have it on good authority that the goal nets we use are of very high quality (highest quality holes sewn together) and Madejski has asked the team therefore not to shoot into them too much as it will damage them and he'll have to fork out for some more.
