Dismissals at Ipswich v Reading games

by Barry the bird boggler » 04 Apr 2010 07:21

Why? Going back over the last 15 years or so we seem to lose at least one player on every visit for usually some totally unaccountable or unjustified reason. Since 1995 I can recall

Andy Bernal
Andy Legg
Borislav Michailov
Nicky Shorey
Matt Mills

And in that time that's about 6/7 games.

Any conspiracy theories out there?

It's definitely 6 in the last 15 years. Whilst my records arenlt complete the nesxt best (worst?) is Wycombe, Cambridge, Bradford City , QPR, Swansea and WBA each with only 3.

Yeah! we're a team of donkey clogging hardmen, that don't subscribe to the 'beautiful game theory' and the world (that usually ignores us altogether, has a conspiracy campaign against us) or maybe, just maybe, there's an outside chance that it's merely bad luck and the happenstance of playing football!

In that time the games as I recall have been

Ipswich 1-2 Reading - 1996
Ipswich 5-2 Reading - 1997 (Mihailov and Bernal off)
Ipswich 1-0 Reading - 1998 (Legg off)
Ipswich 1-1 Reading - 2002
Ipswich 3-1 Reading - 2003 (Viveash off)
Ipswich 1-1 Reading - 2004 (Shorey off)
Ipswich 0-3 Reading - 2005
Ipswich 2-0 Reading - 2009
Ipswich 2-0 Reading - 2010 (Mills off)

So that's 6 off in 9 games - or two thirds of a player in every game (or a Jay Tabb if you prefer).

A couple of anomalies there, six is correct but you're getting your Bernal's mixed up - Bernal went in goal when Mihailov was sent off in August 96, and was sent off in March 98.

Ipswich 1-2 Reading - Mar 96
Ipswich 5-2 Reading - Aug 96 (Mihailov)
Ipswich 1-0 Reading - Mar 98 (Legg and Bernal)
Ipswich 3-1 Reading - Mar 03 (Viveash off)
Ipswich 1-1 Reading - Aug 03 (Shorey off)
Ipswich 1-1 Reading - Sep 04
Ipswich 0-3 Reading - Nov 05
Ipswich 2-0 Reading - Aug 09
Ipswich 2-0 Reading - Apr 10 (Mills off)

I remember Counago getting sent off for clobbering Adie Williams at our place and wasn't there a sending off for them in that game where Viveash lost it?

My theory is that Mills went into a tackle with both feet and caught the man. The ref then applied the laws of the game.
I don't believe there was intent - but he was not in control once he launched into the tackle. I suspect he will lose the appeal [but I hope he wins!].

For one of the dismissals I have a theory that Magilton conned the ref!

Was that the one where Adi winked at the crowd whilst rolling on the floor in agony?

Have you seen the video of the incident? He went in one footed with studs down and caught the man :|

Define studs down and studs up?

I thought he slid in one foot going for the ball... I think it was more a 60-40 challenge, not in Mills favour, but I don't think he went in hard to go through the ball, just to poke it. The bottom of his boot and therefore studs, looked to be perpendicular to the ground to me, but I'll take another, more detailed look.

I think we'll lose the appeal, because the red was given for a challenge that happened, not something that didn't, but I still think the red was overly harsh.

No, you're right studs down, one footed for sure, possibly got a piece of the ball, not that that is a defence these days.

Nope, Gardsoe got away with kicking the ball away and provoking Viveash. Not even a yellow card.
