Hoop Blah Although I wouldn't have been disappointed to see the pair of them move on I'm quite happy they're signing on again as it's obvious that McDermott wants them around.

I really enjoy reading comments like this. There really seems to be an enormous amount of unquestioning confidence surrounding McDermott's opinion over the quality of players and their value to the team. Even under Coppell we never spoke with the same swagger about his ability to pick a player. I really, really hope McDermott can continue to live up to his immense (albeit burgeoning) reputation in this respect, and I see no real reason why not, given his recent moves and past experience. It's a really nice feeling to trust the 'McDermott knows best' philosophy. He won't strike gold every time, but blimey, he could sign a camel and I'd trust his decision.

Great news Ivar is a legend one of the best signings this club has ever made. Bryn is a great player to have in the squad he was brilliant at right back at Anfield.

Ian Royal Can't say I'm enthused by either. I thought they were ideal candidates for relieving pressure on the wage bill to allow for fresh new signings. And neither would be serious contenders for a regular first team place for me next season.

Both will have taken substantial wage reductions as part of any new deal, to fit in with the new wage structure.

I agree they aren't necessarily first teamers now, maybe Ivar more so that Bryn, but they are good squad players to have around.

Good news!

That last two posts are spot on...and why Ian Royal shouldn't post on the Team Board.

Wycombe Royal THat's right because 3 specialist centre backs is more than enough to have in your squad.

made do with just the 2 when we went up didnt we?

We also had Sam Sodje, Peter Mate was signed on loan and then Duberry joined in the January.

So I make that 4 specialist centre backs, and then five when Duberry joined. The fact that two didn't play irrelevant before you mention that.

Duberry joined in the Premier League when Sonko got injured. Not during our promotion season. I believe the other two were also signed post promotion, but I could be wrong. If not, Mate spent most of his time with us injured so hardly counts.

Had Rodgers been around, I'm quietly confident neither Bryn or Ivar would still be here. As for Ivar, as someone quite rightly pointed out, what you see is what you get. He's still good enough for this level, he's no worse than Pearce and is still our club captain.

Good moves really, presuming they've taken a wage cut that is.

The cost of buying/recruiting decent squad players would have taken money out of the budget for signing new 1st team quality players and so by that rationale I'm happy.

I assumed Brendy was talking about "when" we went up, ie the first season in the Premiership, and not the record breaking season.

Anyway, we also had Aaron Brown for the promotion season. However we had two centre backs with impeccable injury records who played nearly every match. You can't say that now with Ingi's recent injury record.

Disappointed unless it's to groom them into coaching roles - neither should be in the first team if we're serious about doing something next season. Mills, Zurab and Pearce are all better than Ingimarsson at this point.

You ever heard of a squad? It's not all about a first team. These two staying on for one more season is great news. Two very experienced heads and squad players who can come in and do a decent job when called upon. The youngsters need some older heads around them!

Mills and Pearce? And it does rather undermine your argument about needing 4.

Pleased they are both staying. Pearce isn't really good enough to be challenging for a starting place next to Matt Skillz.

It's going to be a strange Summer, lots of clubs will be trimming the squad sizes so established (read older) players could well be happy with contracts they normally would not have accepted.

They can both still do a great job for the team both as players and coaches.
