Ivar and Brynjar agree to stay with Reading

by IcelandicStokie » 14 May 2010 15:23

Ivar and Brynjar have both agreed a 1-yr contract. Their agent, Olfur Gardarson confirms this in Icelandic media.

The contracts will either be signed today or after the weekend.

I won't believe anything until Reading FC confirms it.

Sky Sports say Ivar has agreed to stay for another year as well.

Good news. We couldnt afford to loose another central defender. They may be past their best, but both can more than do a job at this level.

Can't say I'm enthused by either. I thought they were ideal candidates for relieving pressure on the wage bill to allow for fresh new signings. And neither would be serious contenders for a regular first team place for me next season.

THat's right because 3 specialist centre backs is more than enough to have in your squad.

I'm sure there has still been a lot of pressure relieved on the wage bill becasue these new deals will be on vastly reduced terms to their expiring ones (Ingimarsson especially).

Excellent news re Bryn, no brainer that we needed to hold on to him.

Not so sure about Ivar (sad to say). Can;t see him being a starter next season and would hope we still look for a younger, pacier centre back.

That's your opinion.

For me, the moment Gunnarsson nutmegged that Liverpool player, he'd earned his new contract. 8)

Although I wouldn't have been disappointed to see the pair of them move on I'm quite happy they're signing on again as it's obvious that McDermott wants them around.

It's a good sign that they both feel that it's worth taking a 1 year deal with us as opposed to some potentially longer deals elsewhere and it means that any other additions to the squad will be less of a gamble because these two are trustworthy pro's at this level.

I do wonder whether Coppell called either of them. I had thought he'd offer Ivar a deal, but the speed with which this has been sorted would suggest not.

Very pleased to see both stay. They are ideal squad players. I am not the biggest Alex Pearce fan but central defenders often work best in certain pairings, maybe things will click between him and Mills, for me the full backs are a bigger worry.

We also had Sam Sodje, Peter Mate was signed on loan and then Duberry joined in the January.

So I make that 4 specialist centre backs, and then five when Duberry joined. The fact that two didn't play irrelevant before you mention that.
