It's easy to pay over the odds when it's someone else's money you're paying - but I agree. From TS's point of view it was a no-brainer.

So where teams would normally play Portsmouth they'd have the afternoon off?

Yep. You'd just get a 23 team division with 2 extra "free Saturdays". 2 would be relgated at the end of the season with 3 up, and 3 down from D3 with 4 up and 3 up from the Conference and so on....

Weren't we relegated the last time we played in a 23 team divison (1988)?

I didn't realise it affects all the divisions below like that. Luton Town must be rubbing their hands together at an added prospect of returning to the League at Portsmouth's expense.

Sorry I got that wrong  its only going to be 1 down from D4 meaning still only 2 up from the Conference.

I'd forget Tommy Smith, Portsmouth aren't going to die. The appeal by HMRC isn't the most convincing and even if the court did agree with them and the CVA gets block. Portsmouth would more then likely get it overturned at the court of appeal.

I just can not see how HMRC has enough evidence and strong enough case to win. HMRC will have to accept that the CVA means 20p in the £1 for them and they don't top the list of creditors!

However, TS will be a handy player for Portsmouth at this level.

Gunny Fishcake The same " sporting chance " when Pompey broke all the rules of bringing the game into disrepute by not " playing "against Fulham last game of the season losing the game 1-0 to Fulham because they did not compete and they were in the FA Cup Final and we all know the consequence of that result...........what goes around comes around !!!

Shame for John Anthony Portsmouth Football Club Westwood - he'll need to take out a mortgage to get all those tattoos removed.

He'd be useful to have around for a standard wage, but in my opinion he's not the striker some people on here thought he was. The last season shows that he's often injured and isn't a prolific striker. The season before last he was indeed prolific for Watford, but that was never the case for the rest of his career. I like his general play and touch but don't see him as much of a potential goalscorer.

HMRC are angling for new precedents in my opinion. And they are trying to expose possible criminal behaviour by the football club. This won't be Portsmouth's last crisis by a long chalk.

Typical Pompey off the hook again - judge had no guts or HMRC had no case.

The worst of playing them early in the season is that we could go down there - get a hard won win - perhaps have a player or two injured and then lose the points again if they go out of business before the end of the season. I almost hope we lose as it will be less annoying if they go out of business.

At least we are playing them away I suppose. It would be even more annoying if we beat them at home and then lost the points later.
